Many hormones are released into the blood in a spasmodic and irregular manner. In this case, their concentrations change in an episodic or pulsatile fashion. This applies, for instance, to luteinizing hormone (LH, lutropin). [Pg.372]

Thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH) and the related hormones lutropin (luteinizing hormone, LH) and follitropin (follicle-stimulating hormone, FSH) originate in the adenohypophysis. They are all dimeric glycoproteins with masses of around 28 kDa. Thyrotropin stimulates the synthesis and secretion of thyroxin by the thyroid gland. [Pg.380]

The menotropins, human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) and urofollitropin are prepared from the urine of postmenopausal women. HMG has approximately equal amounts of FSH an LH. Urofollitropin has only FSH activity. Follitropin alpha and follitropin beta are two FSH products which are made with recombinant DNA technology. Lutropin alpha is recombinant human LH. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is produced in the placenta and excreted in the urine. It has mainly LH activity. Choriogonadotropin alpha is the world s first recombinant chorionic gonadotropin (r-hCG) for the treatment of anovulation, the most common cause of infertility in women. [Pg.388]

Lutropin alfa, the recombinant form of human LH, was introduced in the USA in 2004. When given by subcutaneous injection, it has a half-life of about 10 hours. Lutropin has only been approved for use in combination with follitropin alfa for stimulation of follicular development in infertile women with profound LH deficiency. It has not been approved for use with the other preparations of FSH nor for simulating the endogenous LH surge that is needed to complete follicular development and precipitate ovulation. [Pg.834]

Eu3+, Tb3+, Sm3+, Dy3+ complexes have different emission wavelengths with sharp peak profiles, which are suitable for multi-component immunoassay. Several Eu-Sm two-color time-resolved immunoassays have been reported. Since the sensitivity of Sm3+ chelates is not high compared to Eu3+ and Tb3+, Eu-Sm two-color assays are used for the simultaneous determination of a low concentration component (Eu) and a relatively high concentration component (Sm) in serum the assayed combinations are lutropin and follitropin, myoglobin and carbonic dehydratase, AFP and free (3-subunit of human chorionic gonadotrophin (Hemmila et al., 1987). Use of Eu-Tb is reported by Eriksson et al. (2000) for the simultaneous determination of human serum free and total PSA. [Pg.195]

Synthetic peptides corresponding to various portions of a protein sequence have been used as powerful tools with which to investigate interactions between subunits. For example, two contact sites on the a-subunit of human lutropin have been identified by this method.20) Peptides corresponding to the entire sequence of the a-subunit of lutropin were incubated in the presence of separated a- and /8-subunits, and the reconstitution of heterodimeric structure was monitored by difference absorption spectroscopy, reverse phase F1PLC and gel filtration (Table 3.1). After a 24-hour incubation, peptide 33-58... [Pg.58]
