Interstitial-cell stimulating hormone

The gonadotrophic hormones of the pituitary include the interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH), which is present and effective in both males and females, and the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates the development of multiple follicles in females and apparently in males induces spermatogenesis.

Chorionic gonadotrophin (human chorionic gonadotrophin HCG) is secreted by the placenta and is obtained from the urine of pregnant women. Its predominant action is that of luteinising hormone (LH) (interstitial cell stimulating hormone) which induces progesterone production by the corpus luteum and, in the male, gonadal testosterone... 

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is one of the gonadotrophin hormones (with FSH), secreted by the anterior pituitary and consists of double peptide chains. It causes the monthly ripening in one ovary of a follicle and stimulates ovulation. In men it facilitates the production of sperm in the testes (hence its alternative name, interstitial cell stimulating hormone, ICSH). It is used therapeutically with FSH in female infertility treatment. It is available, in combination with FSH, in human menopausal gonadotrophin. See OVULATION-INDUCING AGENTS,...

In females, an acute rise of LH, termed LH surge , triggers ovulation and development of the corpus luteum ( yellow hody ) (Fig. 1). In males, LH has also been called Interstitial Cell-Stimulating Hormone (ICSH) as it stimulates testosterone production by Leydig cells. LH and FSH act synergistically to govern the reproductive function. 

Hormones of the Anterior Lobe of the Hypophysis. Table XVIII in Section 2 shows that the anterior lobe produces six different hormones somatotropin, thyrotropin, corticotropin, luteotropic hormone, follicle-stimulating, and interstitial cell-stimulating hormones. The last three hormones are grouped together under the generic term gonadotropic hormones. 

The interstitial cell-stimulaling effect (ICSH = interstitial cell-stimulating hormone), enhances the production of hormones in the interstitial cells (esterone or testosterone), and is identical with the luteinizing effect (LH) (conversion of the follicles to the corpus luteum). 

Interstitial Cell-Stimulating Hormone (ICSH) or luteinizing hormone (LH). This, too, is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 30,000 (from hog hypophyses). Its structure is still unknown. 

The interstitial cell-stimulating hormone of the hypophysis controls the production of gonadal hormones. In the testes, Leydig s cells are stimulated to produce testosterone and estrone in the female organism the follicles are stimulated to produce progesterone (see also Section 11).
