Simple conventional refining is based essentially on atmospheric distillation. The residue from the distillation constitutes heavy fuel, the quantity and qualities of which are mainly determined by the crude feedstock available without many ways to improve it. Manufacture of products like asphalt and lubricant bases requires supplementary operations, in particular separation operations and is possible only with a relatively narrow selection of crudes (crudes for lube oils, crudes for asphalts). The distillates are not normally directly usable processing must be done to improve them, either mild treatment such as hydrodesulfurization of middle distillates at low pressure, or deep treatment usually with partial conversion such as catalytic reforming. The conventional refinery thereby has rather limited flexibility and makes products the quality of which is closely linked to the nature of the crude oil used. [Pg.484]

Again, irrespective of the hardware the chemistry is consistent. The hydrostatic testing is the first test used on the lube system. The system is tested while assembled or partially assembled, based on the particular system. A test pressure of VA times the maximum allowable working pressure, a minimum of 20 psi for the oil side, is used for the test. For the oil-wetted parts, the test fluid should be light oil, which is normally the recommended lubricant for the compressor train. The test period is the length of time needed to inspect for leaks, or a minimum ol thirty minutes. Acceptance is based on the lack of leaks as visually observed or the lack of a drop in the test pressure. [Pg.415]

Partially fluorinated X-IP has been used for a number of years as an additive in the inert lubricant PFPE film on the surface of a magnetic hard disk to enhance start/stop durability of PFPE lubricants [29,30]. Recently it has been used as a vapor lubricated film on the surface of the disks [31 ]. In order to avoid the PFPE being catalyzed to decomposition by the slider material AI2O3 (refer to Section 3.4), XI -P was also examined as a protective film on the surface of the magnetic heads [25,32]. The results of CSS tests indicate that the thermal stability of the lubricant was greatly improved in the presence of X-1P, and the thickness of X-1P film on the slider surface has an important influence on HDD lubrication properties. [Pg.214]
