Start-stop

Hydrodynamic principles for gas bearings are similar to those involved with Hquid lubricants except that gas compressibility usually is a significant factor (8,69). With gas employed as a lubricant at high speeds, start—stop wear is minimized by selection of wear-resistant materials for the journal and bearing. This may involve hard coatings such as tungsten carbide or chromium oxide flame plate, or soHd lubricants, eg, PTFE and M0S2. [Pg.252]

Filtration and water-knockout systems are used to clean up the gas before it enters a compressor. Cooling systems are sometimes required to maintain compressor discharge temperatures below 54°C to avoid damage to the pipeline s protective coatings. Automated compressor stations are typically staffed by maintenance and repair personnel eight hours per day, five days per week. Other stations are staffed on a 24-hour basis because personnel must start, stop, and regulate compressors in response to orders from the dispatch office. [Pg.17]

The 3 of 9 bar code is a variable-length, bidirectional, discrete, selfchecking, alphanumeric bar code. Its data character set contains 43 characters 0-9, A—Z, -,., , /, -i-, %, and space. Three of the nine elements are wide and six are narrow. A common character ( ) is used exclusively for both a Start and Stop character. The Start/Stop characters must be included in every bar code. It s the Start/Stop pattern that allows symbols to be scanned bidirectionally. [Pg.1971]

Magnetic motor starters are similar in function to manual starters except that thev are solenoid-operated, Thev are available up to 3730 kW (5()()0 hp). One of the main advantages is the convenience of electrical operation. Start-stop push buttons can be located anywhere, lien automatic or remote operation is needed, magnetic starters are essential. [Pg.2488]

These devices are tested only for internal explosions and not for external explosions pressurizing the devices from the outside. As an example, a factory-sealed push-button start/stop station connected to an explosion-proof motor starter cannot suffice as a seal for the motor starter conduit entry. A separate seal must be installed at the point of conduit entry. [Pg.540]

Rotary positive-displacement compressors should be operated as base loaded units. They are especially sensitive to the repeated start-stop operation required by load-following applications. Generally, rotary positive-displacement compressors are designed to unload about every six to eight hours. This unload cycle is needed to dissipate the heat generated by the compression process. If the unload frequency is too great, these compressors have a high probability of failure. [Pg.561]

A valve is defined as any device by which the flow of fluid may be started, stopped, regulated or directed by a movable part that opens or obstmcts passage of the fluid. Valves must be able to accurately control fluid flow, system pressure and to sequence the operation of all actuators within a hydraulic system. [Pg.612]

The process envelope must define the full range of operating conditions that will be expected of the belt-drive system. For example, will the drive operate continuously in one direction or will it be subjected to start/stops or direction reversals Will the drive system be subjected to radical speed changes or be used for braking the driven unit Such factors are important in that they help define the full range of load dynamics that the belt system must accommodate. From this data, the appropriate service factor that... [Pg.970]

Often, an important consideration in the definition of a missile s mission is the ability to stop the rocket motor upon demand. Such capability provides the opportunity to exercise control over the flight path and to make corrections where necessary. Solid propellants do not readily lend themselves to start-stop applications because the oxidizer and fuel are already mixed, and... [Pg.57]

I will present here the properties of various sources when the random variable considered is the field intensity. In this case, one has access to the mean and variance via a simple photodetector. The autocorrelation function can be interpreted as the probability of detecting one photon at time t + t when one photon has been detected at time t. The measurement is done using a pair of photodetectors in a start stop arrangement (Kimble et al., 1977). The system is usually considered stationary so that the autocorrelation function, which is denoted depends only on r and is defined by ... [Pg.355]

Partially fluorinated X-IP has been used for a number of years as an additive in the inert lubricant PFPE film on the surface of a magnetic hard disk to enhance start/stop durability of PFPE lubricants [29,30]. Recently it has been used as a vapor lubricated film on the surface of the disks [31 ]. In order to avoid the PFPE being catalyzed to decomposition by the slider material AI2O3 (refer to Section 3.4), XI -P was also examined as a protective film on the surface of the magnetic heads [25,32]. The results of CSS tests indicate that the thermal stability of the lubricant was greatly improved in the presence of X-1P, and the thickness of X-1P film on the slider surface has an important influence on HDD lubrication properties. [Pg.214]

A thick is deposited on top. This is then covered with a molecularly thin film of lubricant to minimize wear during start-stop contacts and to passivate the disc surface against contamination and corrosion. High-molecular-weight perfluoropolyalkylether (PFPE) polymers are widely used for this purpose. In order to improve surface bonding, the PFPEs are modified with specific functional end groups. All these molecules have similar backbone structures, namely ... [Pg.266]

Importantly, the dead-time of TACs and TDCs is comparatively long, typically 125-350 ns. When a photon arrives within this time interval after the detection of a photon, it will not be observed. Therefore, care must be taken that the count rate of the experiment is sufficiently low to prevent this pulse-pileup. TACs and TDCs usually operate in reversed start-stop geometry. Here, the TAC is started by the fluorescence signal and stopped by the laser trigger. [Pg.112]
