Long term view

The scenario of Benson and Ponton seems to be for the remote future. However, this is no quality rating at all, since we all need such long-term views for new irmovations. Moreover, parts of the predictions certainly have aheady been addressed... 

As a final comment, it should be noted that many of the treatments described above for minimizing environmental pollution are quite energy-intensive. However, when taking a long-term view of the present state of our surroundings, it is mandatory that this extra energy input should be accommodated by the metallurgical industry.

The long-term view on soil fertility management with its emphasis on the enhancement of SOM is a major case for organic farming. This holds all the more true in SSA, where SOM largely determines soil CEO, pH and Al toxicity in many regions (Schlecht et al., 2006). SOM contains practically all N and 20-80% of all P in the surface horizons of tropical African soils (Bationo et al., 1998), and it positively affects infiltration rate, water holding capacity and soil microbial activity.

A proposal will normally be rejected out of hand if its NPV is not positive, if its payback period is greater than some pre-set threshold or if its IRR is less than the current cost of capital. If there still remain projects between which a choice must be made, the organization should probably choose those which have the highest positive NPV.
