Born in London, Paul May grew up in Redditch, Worcestershire. He went on to study at Bristol University, where he graduated with a first class honours in chemistry in 1985. He then joined GEC Hirst Research Centre in Wembley where he worked on semiconductor processing for three years, before returning to Bristol to study for a PhD in plasma etching of semiconductors. His PhD was awarded in 1991, and he then remained at Bristol to co-found the CVD diamond research group. In 1992 he was awarded a Ramsay Memorial Fellowship to continue the diamond work, and after that a Royal Society University Fellowship. In October 1999 he became a full-time lecturer in the School of Chemistry at Bristol. He is currently 36 years old. His scientific interests include diamond films, plasma chemistry, interstellar space dust, the internet and web technology. His recreational interests include table-tennis, science fiction, and heavy metal music. 

Director of the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University, Dr. IAIN McCALMAN is an internationally renowned cultural historian and author/editor of seven scholarly works, including the widely acclaimed Radical Underworld Prophets, Revolutionaries, and Pornographers in London, 1 5-1840 and, most recently, An Oxford Companion to the Romantic Age. This is his first trade book.

Colin H. McAteer was born in London, UK, and obtained B.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Warwick. In 1984, after postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and Oxford University, UK, he joined British Petroleum PLC at the Sunbury Research Centre, UK. In 1991, he moved to Reilly Industries, Inc., Indianapolis, that in 2006 became Vertellus Specialties Inc. Trained in synthetic, kinetic, and mechanistic inorganic chemistry, his industrial expertise is in catalyzed processes to make transportation fuels, petrochemicals, and specialty chemicals. He has patents in areas including GTL, glycol ethers, pyridine derivatives, and ionic liquids. His ongoing research interests include the catalyzed synthesis of pyridine bases and their alkenyl and cyano derivatives, as well as the use of isotope substitution to investigate the mechanism of catalyzed processes.
