This book is a real treasure of information and ideas for research in the field of ethno-psychopharmacology. I think it should be welcomed by clinicians and by researchers in psychiatry and psychopharmacology in all regions of the world. It is unique in the current scientific literature, and is likely to remain as such for many years. 

In the future, research in psychiatry will probably be increasingly focused on the sequence traumatic life events, disruption of brain development and/or brain functioning, then behavioral and experiential disturbances. For such truly psychobiobehavioral research programs, scientific scrutiny of the factor psychogenesis will be indispensable. 

Two ways, then, could make biological research in psychiatry more diagnostically meaningful precise definition of the syndromes to be studied and their systematic functional analysis. Methods to carry out such analyses in a...

Research in psychopharmacology has shown that ethnicity must be considered in psychiatry as well (Lawson, 1986 Pi 8c Simpson, 2005). Early clinical trials with antipsychotic and antidepressant medications showed that ethnic minorities may respond when given the same doses as Caucasians, and may have more side effects (Lawson, 1986 Lawson, 1990). However, dosing cannot be used as a measure of appropriate pharmacotherapy because an extensive literature has shown that African Americans often receive higher doses of antipsychotics despite evidence of more side effects.

The neuropsychiatric tradition goes back to the formerly unified disciplines of psychiatry and neurology. It remains influential in Germany and has been a significant feature in psychiatric research in France, Italy, and many Eastern European countries. This tradition has more recently been extended in some countries to embrace substantial contributions from neuropsychology (Remschmidt and van Engeland, 1999b).

Electroconvulsive therapy [ECT] is one of the oldest somatic treatments in psychiatry. The emergence of the field of psychopharmacology in the 1960s eclipsed advancement in ECT practice and research. To some extent, the pendulum has swung back in the past 15 years, as there has been intensive rediscovery of the basic science of ECT and an increase in its clinical use. Contemporary research has reexamined clinical issues, such as indications for treatment, response prediction, and relapse prevention, given the changing nature of psychiatric treatment and referral patterns. At the same time, more sophisticated approaches to treatment... 

Following the introduction of ECT, much of the early research focused on basic properties of the electrical stimulus. This work was largely abandoned following the introduction of psychopharmacological treatments in psychiatry, and there was little technical progress in the administration of ECT. In the last 15 years, there has been renewed research interest in this area, which has in turn led to modifications in treatment technique.
