In classical mechanics, the state of the system may be completely specified by the set of Cartesian particle coordinates r. and velocities dr./dt at any given time. These evolve according to Newton s equations of motion. In principle, one can write down equations involving the state variables and forces acting on the particles which can be solved to give the location and velocity of each particle at any later (or earlier) time t, provided one knows the precise state of the classical system at time t. In quantum mechanics, the state of the system at time t is instead described by a well behaved mathematical fiinction of the particle coordinates q- rather than a simple list of positions and velocities. [Pg.5]

This chapter is in no way meant to impart a thorough understanding of the theoretical principles on which computational techniques are based. For preparative purposes batch fractionation is often employed. A modified definition of resonance energy has been introduced by Dewar (66T(S8)75, 69JA6321) in which the reference point is the corresponding open-chain polyene. In principle this overcomes the difficulties inherent in comparing observed stability with that of an idealized molecule with pure single and double bonds, as thermochemical data for the reference acyclic polyenes are capable of direct experimental determination. Whether we call the set of principles I have listed under the heading Quality assurance, Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement or Quality Control makes no difference since it does not change the set of principles. We often seem to invent a term then decide what it means rather than invent or discover a set of principles and think of a suitable name which conveys exactly what we intend without confusing people.
