Adhesion molecules such as LI, neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) and N-cadherin promote axonal regeneration by homophilic interactions between axons and Schwann cell surfaces (see Ch. 7). The expression of p75 (low affinity NGF receptor, Ch. 27) is also increased at the Schwann cell surface after injury. Extracellular matrix molecules, such as tenascin and proteoglycans, increase the regenerative potential of damaged peripheral nerves by binding to integrins on the axonal surface.

Adhesion molecules. The downregulation of the polysialylated neuronal cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) from the axonal surface (Charles et al 2000) is a necessary prerequisite to render the axon permissive to myelination (Charles et al., 2002 Coman et al., 2005). LI, another adhesion molecule expressed at the axonal surface, promotes myelination (Coman et al., 2005).

Isom Yes. The reason we went after that is because in the LI family of cell adhesion molecules an intracellular tyrosine residue is critical for cell adhesion and ankyrin recruitment. We predict that the tyrosine in will be very important in formation of the Na channel signalling complex (Malhotra et al 2001).

Each of these tumors produces CK, and each may produce transthyretin. A transitional zone between papilloma and carcinoma of the choroid plexus confirms choroid plexus carcinoma. Primary carcinoma of the choroid plexus so closely resembles metastatic carcinoma that the latter must be carefully excluded before the diagnosis of primary choroid plexus carcinoma can be made. Occult pulmonary or gastrointestinal primary tumors are common sources. The paucity of these primary systemic carcinomas in children facilitates diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma in a patient in this age group. Well-studied CAMs of the Ig-family in the nervous system are the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) and the neuron-glia cell adhesion molecule (LI or NILE). Both molecules are found on neurons and have been suggested to mediate neuron-glia interactions by heterophilic binding mechanisms.
