Latex-formulated adhesives

Adhesives. Clays, especially kaolin and attapulgite, are widely used in various adhesive formulations. Adhesives (qv) containing clays can be derived from natural products such as starch or protein, or be whoUy synthetic, eg, latex, hot melt, emulsion, etc. [Pg.210]

Antioxidants. Similar antioxidants as for solvent-borne CR adhesives can be used. Addition of antioxidants is important when resins sensitive to oxidation are included in polychloroprene latex formulations. 2 phr is the common amount of antioxidant in latex adhesives. [Pg.669]

Fillers. Addition of fillers is not common in polychloroprene latex formulations. Fillers are used to reduce cost and control rheology, solids content and modulus. However, cohesion and adhesion are reduced. Calcium carbonate, clay and silica are some of the fillers than can be added. Alumina trihydrate is often used when resistance to degradation by flame is important. [Pg.669]

Water is sometimes used as a solvent for water-soluble resins. Certain epoxy adhesives are available as water-based emulsion or latex formulations. In the early 1970s, during the time of the petroleum crisis, water-based adhesives were thought of as a possible replacement for solvent-based adhesives systems. However, water-based adhesives never met the lofty expectations primarily because of the time and energy required to remove water from the bond line, the corrosion that the water causes in drying ovens, and the poor moisture resistance of cured water-based adhesives. [Pg.22]

In addition, allyl methacrylate is often added to a latex formulation as a crosslinking/grafting monomer [52] especially in the case of core-shell latexes. This monomer is often used to promote adhesion between various polymeric layers, especially in multilayered composite latex particles, which are often used as impact modifiers [53]. [Pg.122]

Use Level 0.05-0.15% (latexes, emulsion paint, paper coating), 0.05-0.25% (water-based inks, pesticide formulations, adhesives), 0.04-0.125% (aq. slurries, pigment disp.), 0.08-0.25% (tape joint compds.), 0.05-0.18% (oil-in-water emulsions)... [Pg.668]

A series of conductive electroactive paints were prepared by blending polypyrrole colloids (20-80 wt %) with an acrylic latex formulation in water [136]. Dip coating of lead, stainless steel, and Zincalume substrates resulted in strongly adherent electroactive coatings having electrical conductivities. similar to carbon-filled paints. The addition of the CP colloids to the latex paint increased adhesion. [Pg.1623]

A summary is presented of topics discussed at a conference on adhesive tapes organised in Athens by AFERA. These included the use of iodopropynyl butyl carbamate for the protection of water-based adhesives from biological attack, the formulation of NR latex based adhesives with tackifiers in aqueous dispersion, the effects of silicon contamination on adhesion to plastics film supports treated in different ways, possible harmful effects... [Pg.99]

Dispersions of copolymers of butadiene with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in aqueous potassium hydroxide have been mentioned in the patent literature" as a dip for adhering rayon tire cord to rubber. The effect is most evident when carboxyl groups are present in the adhesive, the tie cement, and the cover stocks. The adhesive may be applied as latex, aqueous dispersion, or cement. A patent issued to the Dunlop Company Ltd." describes the use of a styrene-butadiene-itaconic acid copolymer with Gen-Tac Latex (GenCorp) in formulating an RFL (resorcinol formaldehyde latex) type adhesive for bonding a natural rubber compound to Nylon 66 and rayon tire cords. Brodnyan" also claims carboxylic adhesives for rayon, nylon, and Dacron cords. In this case, the tire cords were treated with a mixed polymer latex containing resorcinol-formaldehyde condensate, a butadiene-vinyl pyridine copolymer, an SBR copolymer, and a multifunctional copolymer from methyl acrylate, 2-hydroxy propyl methacrylate, and acrylic acid. A different approach was reported by Badenkov" whereby rayon or nylon tire cords were coated with... [Pg.274]

The manufacture of abrasives (sand paper), mainly in combination with formaldehyde, book binding and gummed tapes are the main markets today. Another still strong outlet for g. is as a binder in match heads.
