Phenol—formaldehyde resins are used as mol ding compounds (see Phenolic resins). Their thermal and electrical properties allow use in electrical, automotive, and kitchen parts. Other uses for phenol—formaldehyde resins include phenoHc foam insulation, foundry mold binders, decorative and industrial laminates, and binders for insulating materials. [Pg.497]

In other areas, POD has been used to improve the wear resistance of a mbber latex binder by incorporation of 25% of Oksalon fibers. Heat-resistant laminate films, made by coating a polyester film with POD, have been used as electrical insulators and show good resistance to abrasion and are capable of 126% elongation. In some instances, thin sheets of PODs have been used as mold release agents. For this appHcation a resin is placed between the two sheets of POD, which is then pressed in a mold, and the sheets simply peel off from the object and mold after the resin has cured. POD-based membranes exhibit salt rejection properties and hence find potential as reverse osmosis membranes in the purification of seawater. PODs have also been used in the manufacturing of electrophotographic plates as binders between the toner and plate. These improved binders produce sharper images than were possible before. [Pg.535]

Flame-Resistant Grades. Grade FR-1, paper-based laminates with a phenoHc resin binder, are similar in all properties to Grade XP, but so formulated to have at least a UL94 V-1 classification when tested according to UL94. [Pg.537]

Composite-Based Laminates. Grade CEM-1 are laminates with continuous-filament glass cloth surfaces and a cellulose core, all with a flame-resistant epoxy resin binder. With good punching practice, sheets up to and including 2.4 mm (0.094 in.) in thickness may be punched at temperatures not less than 23°C (73°F). Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines. As cross-linker PMDI can be used, which has a shelf life of 5 to 6 h in water. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instmment panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundry core binder. [Pg.350]

Vinylidene Chloride Copolymer Latex. Vinyhdene chloride polymers are often made in emulsion, but usuaUy are isolated, dried, and used as conventional resins. Stable latices have been prepared and can be used direcdy for coatings (171—176). The principal apphcations for these materials are as barrier coatings on paper products and, more recently, on plastic films. The heat-seal characteristics of VDC copolymer coatings are equaUy valuable in many apphcations. They are also used as binders for paints and nonwoven fabrics (177). The use of special VDC copolymer latices for barrier laminating adhesives is growing, and the use of vinyhdene chloride copolymers in flame-resistant carpet backing is weU known (178—181). VDC latices can also be used to coat poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) bottles to retain carbon dioxide (182). [Pg.442]

This low viscosity resin permits cure at low (70°C) temperatures and rapidly develops excellent elevated temperature properties. Used to increase heat resistance and cure speed of bisphenol A epoxy resins, it has utihty in such diverse appHcations as adhesives, tooling compounds, and laminating systems. A moleculady distilled version is used as a binder for soHd propellants (see Explosives and propellants) and for military flares (see Pyrotechnics).
