Once published, the journal article becomes part of the primary literature of chemistry. The primary literature is a permanent and public record of all scientihc works, many of which are refereed journal articles. 

The Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) reprints titles and abstracts from refereed journal articles to facilitate searches of the chemical literature. 

The technology of polymeric carbohydrates is strongly oriented to the most abundant examples, namely starch and cellulose. Tomasik (Cracow) and Schilling (University Center, Michigan), in their wide-ranging article on chemical derivatization of starch, present an extensive compilation of the literature on potentially useful products formed by esterification, etherification, oxidation, and other reactions with starch. Much of the literature cited comes from patent sources, not subject to the conventional refereeing procedures in effect for journal articles, and so the reader needs to judge appropriately the validity of some of the claims made for product structure and practical application. 

The Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes provide rapid (approximately six months), refereed publication of topical items, longer than ordinary journal articles but shorter and less formal than most monographs and textbooks. They are published in an attractive yet economical format authors or editors provide manuscripts typed to specifications, ready for photo-reproduction.

In principle, the works we deal with must have been published in a scientific journal of some sort. This condition is treated fairly broadly. We include Spanish journals that did not use (and in some cases still do not use) anonymous referees, as long as their level of quality is admitted in the profession. Naturally, we also consider articles published in foreign scientific journals with anonymous referees. We also mention books and book chapters in this field. 

Stefano Cicchi was born in 1963. In 1989, he obtained his Doctor in Chemistry from the University of Florence, in 1992 Ph.D. in chemistry from the same university, and in 1993, he became a CNR Fellow. From 1996 to date, he has been with the Department of Organic Chemistry, Ricercatore Universitario, University of Florence. He is a member of the Italian Chemical Society and INSTM (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale Scienza e Tecnica dei Materiali). He has authored 70 original articles and reviews, and has been invited for research at the University of Saragozza (Prof. Pedro Merino). He has been a referee of organic chemistry journals. 

Reprints of articles in journals must not be provided unsolicited unless the articles have been refereed. 

Module 1 focuses entirely on writing a journal-quality paper, a paper suitable for submission to a refereed chemistry journal. Refereed journals include only articles that have made it through a rigorous peer-review process. In this process. 

The primary source of information about the benefits and risks of drugs is found in the scientific literature in articles that have been submitted to independent referees and peer review, and been published in any of the currently available 20,000 biomedical journals. The largest and most commonly used medical bibliographic database, Medline, contains over 15 million citations today, and a search using the word drug gives 3.3 million citations. 

Look at the various types of scientific articles including reviews, preliminary reports and full research papers. Be sure to examine those in the primary source journals which publish detailed research results. These articles have always been sent to referees, active scientists, who check to see that the experiments are described accurately, that the authors have cited relevant literature, and that the conclusions are logical. Ken has published prolifically. He has authored or co-authored nearly 600 articles in refereed journals, an average of 10 papers/year since his birth in Nashville in 1943. The aim of this entry is to present a balanced view of the current state of phenolic resins. The patent literature, refereed journals, and other general sources have been utilized to survey the classical and nonclas-sical phenolic resin systems as well as the nanocomposite systems. The article is pedagogical rather than comprehensive.
