Production. Worldwide cocoa bean production has increased significantly over the past 10 years from approximately 1.6 million t in the 1979—1980 crop year to over 2.4 million t in 1990. The production share by country has also changed dramatically in the last 10 years. The big gainers are Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Ivory Coast. The large gains in Malaysia and Indonesia have helped to diversify production and partially shield the market from adverse weather-induced supply shocks. The biggest losers in production share have been Brazil and Ghana. Table 2 Hsts production statistics for these countries. [Pg.91]

In 1895, the worldwide production of raw cocoa or unroasted cocoa beans was about 75,000 metric tons. One hundred years later, raw cocoa production has increased almost 40-fold to the forecasted 1995-1996 production of 2,760,000 metric tons (Table 2).15 The majority of today s world cocoa supply comes from Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and the Republic of Cameroon even though cacao is not indigenous to east Africa. Although Africa historically has been and still is the largest producer of the world s cocoa supply, the relative quantities produced within African countries... [Pg.176]

Cocoa production has dramatically increased since 1980, from worldwide production of 1.6 million metric tons to 2.6 in 1994, a 60% increase (Table 8).1118There does appear to be somewhat of a leveling in production since 1990 when 2.5 million metric tons of cocoa beans were produced. Africa is the largest producer of cocoa, contributing over 50% of the total worldwide production. The Ivory Coast is the single largest national producer, with 809,000 metric tons in 1994 (32% worldwide production). [Pg.217]

From 250 g of root bark of T. chippii, a small tree growing in the high forest or bush and occurring in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, nearly 4 mg of the new bisindole alkaloid vobparicine (200, C39H43N402) were isolated (62). The dimeric nature of this compound suggested by the molecular formula was con-... [Pg.114]

African coast, such as Senegal and the Ivory Coast. HIV-2 also causes AIDS, although there are some indications that it is less able to do so than HIV-1. It is interesting that the virus that is most closely related to HIV-2 is not HIV-1, but a lentivirus found in sooty mangabey monkeys (simian immunodeficiency virus or SIVSM). SIVSM does not cause disease in sooty mangabeys. [Pg.172]

This ring system is also contained in Serpenticine (294), Schoberidine (295), and Ophiorine (296) (Scheme 93). Picrasidine F (297) was identified as a hydrochloride in Picrasma quassioides and its structure was elucidated by an X-ray structure analysis (86CPB3228). Bleekerine (298) is an additional example. 3. 4. 5. 6 - T e t r a d e h y d r o 1 o n g i c a u d a t i n e (299)was identified in 1998 in Strychnos usambarensis collected from the Ivory Coast. The roots are the main ingredients of African arrow poisons. The absorption maxima were found at Amax = 204, 255, 308, and 367 nm in acidic as well as neutral solutions, thus suggesting a /1-carbolinium chromophore. A bathochromic shift was observed on deprotonation, due to the formation of a zwitterionic species (98P1263). [Pg.144]

Genetic control of D. melanogaster female components In 1989, Jallon and Pechine found a new type of quantitative hydrocarbon polymorphism specific to D. melanogaster females that affects the positions of double bonds in dienes. Although the double bonds remained at the same relative positions - separated by 2 carbons - they were more frequently located on carbons 5,9 in African flies and on carbons 7,11 in non-African flies. A study of 85 strains from around the world found the African type throughout the whole continent south of the Sahara Desert and in the West Indies and a small number of the Pacific islands. For example, the typical Tai females (Ivory Coast) has 30-40 percent 5,9-heptacosadiene (5,9-HD) and 2-6 percent 7,11-HD. Elsewhere... [Pg.257]

Cocoa butter is derived from the tree Theobroma cacao, which grows in several tropical areas, including Indonesia, the Ivory Coast, Malaysia, New Guinea and Brazil, which dominate the trade. The seeds of the tree, known as cocoa beans, were first consumed in the form of a drink prepared by the Maya and Aztec Indians. Cocoa beans were carried to Europe during the 16th century and the product was developed into the sweetened solid bar we are familiar with as chocolate. Cocoa butter is used mainly in the manufacture of chocolate confectionery, but it is also popular for applications in cosmetics and as an ingredient of pharmaceutical creams. [Pg.66]

Vomifoline has been isolated63" from the leaves of Rauwolfia vomitoria collected from the Ivory Coast, and a re-examination of its chemical behaviour and its physical properties has shown that it is identical with peraksine (177) previously the alternative hemiacetal structure had been accepted as the structure of vomifoline. [Pg.186]
