Much information can be understood by a review of certain thermophysical properties of materials and mixtures. In comparing the values of heats of reaction, heats of decomposition and CART to values for known hazardous compounds, an estimation of thermal hazard potential can be made. Table A.2 outlines thermal hazard ranking values that could be used in classifying materials and processes based on heats of reaction and CART determinations (Melhem and Shanley 1997).

Omissions in the ranked values of F, in Table 4.2 reflect the omissions of the data in the original histogram for several classes. As can be judged from Figure 4.10, inclusion of the cumulative probabilities for these classes would not follow the natural pattern of the distribution and are therefore omitted. Select one gene and make a distribution of rank values for all the 298 experiments. Then, set a discretization parameter and thresholds. In this study, we set the degree of discretization at 3 ( 1, 0) and the thresholds at 3% or 5% from each side of top and bottom (i.e., 6% or 10% in total) in rank value distribution. Using these parameters, we assign discrete values to rank values. 

Actually, the purpose of subtracting median values and Z-transformation in each data is only to improve visualization they do not change the results as the following discretization process is based on rank values. 

The middle ranking value. Especially useful with data containing occasional highly outlying values. It is robust (resists the influence of aberrant data).

In non-parametric tests the data are transformed into rank values and then all further calculations are based solely upon these rankings.

The quality of the product is of primary importance in developing a recycling technology converting plastics into fuels by pyrolysis. Today the characterization of a liquid fuel from any sources is obviously based on the qualification methods and standards of fuels from mineral oil. The properties of the pyrolysis-derived fuels from plastics are expected to be similar to conventional fuels (energy content, viscosity, density, octane and cetane number, flash-point, etc.). However, in addition to the familiar ranking values it is necessary to know more about the chemical composition of the plastic pyrolysis oil, because of the peculiarities as follows ... 

In this chapter it will be demonstrated that there is a strict relation between the chemical composition of plastics and their pyrolysis oil, but the relationship is not well understood in many cases due to the fact that the products are determined by both the source and the pathway of decomposition. The ranking values of pyrolysis oils derived from plastics may be estimated on the basis of the correlation of major oil characteristics and chemical composition and structure of component compounds.
