Together, these decomposition approaches argue for combining functional, goal, and structural perspectives of the plant, as needed, in constructing interpretation systems. With any of these hierarchical approaches, each node in the hierarchy can be construed to define a localized interpreter. [Pg.80]

Evidence from recent studies in ecology suggest that functional redundancy exists within some natural communities, but the relative contribution of different species to specific functions is far from equal, and the disappearance of certain species (i.e., dominants and keystone species) can have disproportionately large effects on overall system function and the occurrence of other species. For this reason, the precautionary principle advises that species loss be considered at least as a cause of incremental damage. Landscape-level models offer the possibility to improve our interpretation of local phenomena (e.g., species disappearance) in a wider spatial context. [Pg.133]

For smaller laboratories, the work involved in validation is often difficult, but there are two alternatives. Users can choose a system with an existing standardized and validated protocol and validated interpretation system. Commercially available kits generally provide these, and when utilized exactly as described in the kit insert, are guaranteed to provide diagnostically useful results. A second option would be to use one of the more common standard systems of fixatives with known antibodies, in which publication data has provided some evidence of functionality. As an example, a laboratory could use a 10% neutral buffered formalin fixation with a standard protocol, followed by a biotin-streptavidin HRP system, using a monoclonal antibody combination called AE1/AE3. This has been proven to be a reliable measure of cytokeratin in tissue sections. [Pg.30]

When a toxicant is introduced, activity may increase, decrease, or remain unchanged depending on choice of apparatus, age of the animal, the relative novelty and complexity of the environment, and many other variables. Although a change in an animal s activity as a result of its exposure to a toxicant indicates a change in the function of its nervous system, interpretation is not straightforward. The change can be due to the toxicant s primary effect on nervous system function or to its effect on some other system that results in a secondary effect on nervous system function. Certainly, extrapolation from activity measurements in rodents to such phenomena as hyperactivity in children is unwarranted,... [Pg.2633]

Such systems are an enhancement to various data managanent systems, like LIMS and ELNs. An input certification systan usually does not (1) replace any existing LIMS or quality control system functionality that goes beyond the requirements of calculation, certification, and exception handling of direct inputs (2) create any representation of data beyond textual or tabulated or graphical result entries or (3) contain any third-party calculation or data interpretation. However, such systems may include additional functionality that even makes the development of user interfaces unnecessary automatic form creation. Figure 8.7 shows the outline of the system described in the following. [Pg.350]

These practices prove that dejure the mental hospital system functions as an arm of the medical profession, but de facto it functions as arm of the states law-enforcement system. Accordingly, I maintain that standard psychiatric practices do not represent the abuses of psychiatry on the contrary, they represent its "proper uses, sanctioned by tradition, science, medicine, law, custom, and common sense. The very definition of the word certifiable supports this interpretation of the psychiatrists role formerly called alienist, his job was, and is, to alienate, that is, remove, the subject from society Webster s defines certifiable as fit to be certified as insane, befitting an insane person. ... [Pg.90]

The DATATRAN application language processor operates within the SCOPE operating system on the CDC 6600 and 7600 machines. It consists of six major components, each designed to perform a specific data management or executive system function all are written primarily in FORTRAN, but rely on assembly language routines for character manipulation and efficient input-output operations. The components and their associated system functions are the precompiler which scans each statement in the DATA-TRAN input stream and translates it, if necessary, into an acceptable FORTRAN statement the interpreter which contains the run-time routines to execute the DATATRAN statements, creates and maintains the system s... [Pg.301]

Although the precise role of taurine In retina Is not completely known there Is evidence that It can play an Inhibitory transmitter pole (16, 17) since It Is able to affect potassium and calcium fluxes at the Ionic membrane level (18-20), At the light of these findings It Is easily Interpreted the functional Inhibitory role of taurine In experiments In which from perfused chick and rat retina preloaded with 35S-taurlne light flashes enhance endogenous and labeled taurine release (21,22), Taurine Is the most potent amino acid able to reversibly abolish electroretinogram b wave (23-25) as well as to depress several neuronal populations from cerebral cortex, subcortical areas and spinal cord (26-29), In addition a specific uptake system has been described to occur In rat retina (30, 31) as well as In retinal pigment epithelium (32) and In slices and synaptosome preparations from various areas of the brain (33, 34),... [Pg.266]
