Structural perspective

To provide a rational framework in terms of which the student can become familiar with these concepts, we shall organize our discussion of the crystal-liquid transition in terms of thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural perspectives. Likewise, we shall discuss the glass-liquid transition in terms of thermodynamic and mechanistic principles. Every now and then, however, to impart a little flavor of the real world, we shall make reference to such complications as the prior history of the sample, which can also play a role in the solid behavior of a polymer. [Pg.200]

Together, these decomposition approaches argue for combining functional, goal, and structural perspectives of the plant, as needed, in constructing interpretation systems. With any of these hierarchical approaches, each node in the hierarchy can be construed to define a localized interpreter. [Pg.80]

At the time of this writing, it must be conceded that there have been no fundamental principles-based mathematical model for Nafion that has predicted significantly new phenomena or caused property improvements in a significant way. Models that capture the essence of percolation behavior ignore chemical identity. The more ab initio methods that do embrace chemical structure are limited by the number of molecular fragments that the computer can accommodate. Other models are semiempirical in nature, which limits their predictive flexibility. Nonetheless, the diversity of these interesting approaches offers structural perspectives that can serve as guides toward further experimental inquiry. [Pg.342]

From a structural perspective, histones can be considered to consist of a tri-partite organization in which a central histone fold domain [81] is flanked by N- and C-terminal regions tails with a low level of folding. The histone fold is responsible for the histone bundle and handshake interactions that hold the histone octamer together [45,265,307,308] while the tails do not appear to have any major role in the stability of the octamer subunits [309]. [Pg.266]

The bisindole alkaloids are clearly closely associated with MDR from both historical and structural perspectives. The clinical relevance of this mechanism of drug resistance has not been unambiguously established however, the tissue-specific expression of P-gp has been noted for several normal as well as malignant tissues (105). Therefore, the natural resis-... [Pg.198]

This volume of Advances in Protein Chemistry is the first in which all articles address a single specialized theme within protein science—metal-protein interactions from a structural perspective. Future volumes of Advances in Protein Chemistry will include other thematic volumes in which the reviews will cover different aspects of a single broad area and, as in the past, collections of reviews on a variety of major topics. [Pg.405]

Cells are the fundamental building blocks of the human body. On average the human body contains 10 " cells, ranging in size from nerve cells with a length of 0.5-1.0 m to red blood cells with a diameter of 7 jam. From a structural perspective, the cell can be subdivided into three major components ... [Pg.406]

Protein function at solid-liquid interfaces holds a structural and a dynamic perspective [31]. The structural perspective addresses macroscopic adsorption, molecular interactions between the protein and the surface, collective interactions between the individual adsorbed protein molecules, and changes in the conformational and hydration states of the protein molecules induced by these physical interactions. Interactions caused by protein adsorption are mostly non-covalent but strong enough to cause drastic functional transformations. All these features are, moreover, affected by the double layer and the electrode potential at electrochemical interfaces. Factors that determine protein adsorption patterns have been discussed in detail recently, both in the broad context of solute proteins at solid surfaces [31], and in specific contexts of interfacial metalloprotein electrochemistry [34]. Some important elements that can also be modelled in suitable detail would be ... [Pg.135]

What I have tried to do in this book and the published papers behind it is to move simultaneously in two directions—to form a link between chemistry and physics by introducing simple band structure perspectives into chemical thinking about surfaces. And I have tried to interpret these delocalized band structures from a very chemical point of view—via frontier orbital considerations based on interaction diagrams. [Pg.129]

There have been numerous reviews of transferrin chemistry. Earlier reviews by Aisen and Listowsky (1) and Chasteen (16) have been followed by extensive recent articles that have particularly emphasized the functional properties (3), the physical biochemistry (17), and the structures (18) of transferrins. Here we will concentrate on the bioinorganic chemistry of these intriguing proteins, with a particular emphasis on their binding properties, as shown by chemical and spectroscopic studies, but all set firmly in a structural perspective. [Pg.391]

Although lacking any structural perspective, much of the early work published between 1865 and 1930, and reviewed in the 8th edition of Gmelin, has been vahdated by subsequent investigations. [Pg.3967]
