Applications software that is not targeted to a particular industry is termed horizontal, because it fits into a wide range of industries. The basic group of software is the office suite of applications, consisting of word processing and spreadsheet software as well as e-mail. This suite of applications is generally extended to include presentation, database, collaboration, and Internet software. 

For maty years a purchase order had to be typed on a typewriter and mailed to the supplier. With the help of the Internet an order can be placed almost instantaneously with a supplier ary where in the world with Internet access. Country boimdaries are being dissolved in the business world by the Internet. Software is being developed that resides entirely on the Internet. This brings companies all over the world closer together. Entire supply chains can now be linked together using the World Wide Web. It is much easier to provide accurate demand information to the link in the supply chain that needs it.

The IMES software is an MS-DOS application capable of running on a network. Model codes and documentation can be downloaded from the CD-ROM to a hard drive. An MS-DOS interface is included to provide easy access to IMES and to the model directories, althougli such is not required to access the files. This third edition provides an HTML Interface for s iewing the model directories and Internet sources of some the models. 

While serious research of the behavior of CA systems demands the use of dedicated hardware, the often high cost of such hardware sometimes prevents its acquisition, particularly by young researchers and graduate students just entering this field of study. It is therefore important to realize that there are many excellent software-only solutions that can often be used very effectively for research. While the list provided below is by no means exhaustive, it gives some idea of the kind of packages that are currently available either commercially or via anonymous ftp over the Internet.

LIMS as rented service— The application service provision provider (ASP) is a means of obtaining access to software applications without the need to acquire expensive licenses and hardware or employ high-cost support resources [7]. The application is hosted on a third-party site with system maintenance, backup, and recovery provided by a third party. Products and services can be rented for a contract period on a fixed cost per user/per month basis. The advantages of obtaining LIMS in this fashion include reduced cost in initial investment and reduced requirement of resources for maintaining the LIMS. The continued security and integrity of the data transferred over the Internet is a major concern for this type of LIMS.

Most e-Clinical software consists of integrated suites of applications that support the clinical research process, including various ways of data entry that include in-house data entry, remote data capture, batch data load, and scan forms.
