Internet Society

Created in 1969 as a part of DARPAnet (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration Network), TCP/IP evolved over time. The DARPAnet evolved also, eventually moving out of government hands and becoming the Internet that we know and love. Currently the Internet is managed by the Internet Society (www. i soc. org), which develops new standards for the Internet and for the TCP/IP suite. [Pg.745]

The experimental TCP/IP-based ARPANet, which in its early years carried both research and military traffic, was later split into the Internet, for academic purposes, and the MILNet, for military purposes. The Internet grew continuously and exponentially, extending step by step aU over the world. Early in the 1990s, the Internet Society (see www.isoc.org) was established, and it has served since then as the driving force in the evolution of the Internet, especially in the technological development and standardization processes. [Pg.238]

Born in London, Paul May grew up in Redditch, Worcestershire. He went on to study at Bristol University, where he graduated with a first class honours in chemistry in 1985. He then joined GEC Hirst Research Centre in Wembley where he worked on semiconductor processing for three years, before returning to Bristol to study for a PhD in plasma etching of semiconductors. His PhD was awarded in 1991, and he then remained at Bristol to co-found the CVD diamond research group. In 1992 he was awarded a Ramsay Memorial Fellowship to continue the diamond work, and after that a Royal Society University Fellowship. In October 1999 he became a full-time lecturer in the School of Chemistry at Bristol. He is currently 36 years old. His scientific interests include diamond films, plasma chemistry, interstellar space dust, the internet and web technology. Over the past few decades, sleep deprivation has become a nationwide problem in the United States.
