Modern times

Amber has been a much prized gem material for many millennia and has been found at Stonehenge, in Mycenaen tombs and in ancient European lake dwellings. In modern times it is u.sed for beads and other ornaments, cigarette holders and pipe mouthpieces. 

As loading stresses approach or exceed the shear strength of a solid, inelastic effects are to be expected, and details of the behavior have been readily observed with modern, time-resolving measurement techniques. There are many observations of these behaviors. 

Since 1950, plastics have been development for uses in very high temperature environments. By 1954, it was demonstrated that plastic materials were suitable for thermally protecting structures during intense propulsion heating. This discovery, at that time, became one of the greatest achievements of modern times, because it essentially initially eliminated the thermal barrier to hypersonic atmospheric flight as well as many of the internal heating problems associated with chemical propulsion systems.

Japanese historical records show that the consumption of certain species of pufferOsh (Tetraodon spp.) resulted in paralytic intoxication (8), This problem continues in modern times in various i ian countries, especially Japan, where pufferfish are still regarded as a delicacy. Clinical symptoms of TTX intoxication include numbness, paralysis, and in some instances death. In fact, the "zombie state described in the Voodoo religion has been attributed to TTX in potions derived from pufferOsh (9). 

In modern times, most analyses are performed on an analytical instrument for, e.g., gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra-violet/visible (UV) or infrared (IR) spectrophotometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), mass spectrometry. Each of these instruments has a limitation on the amount of an analyte that they can detect. This limitation can be expressed as the IDL, which may be defined as the smallest amount of an analyte that can be reliably detected or differentiated from the background on an instrument.
