Setting specifications

There are no official specifications for obtaining a minimum level of engine cleanliness from a fuel. However, all additives in France are subject to approval by the Direction des Carburants (DHYCA), with the objective of having data that prove, first of all, the product to be harmless, and second, the product s effectiveness. Likewise, the automotive manufacturers, in establishing their specifications, set the minimum performance to be obtained by the fuel with regard to engine cleanliness. [Pg.243]

Variable-Area Flow Meters. In variable-head flow meters, the pressure differential varies with flow rate across a constant restriction. In variable-area meters, the differential is maintained constant and the restriction area allowed to change in proportion to the flow rate. A variable-area meter is thus essentially a form of variable orifice. In its most common form, a variable-area meter consists of a tapered tube mounted vertically and containing a float that is free to move in the tube. When flow is introduced into the small diameter bottom end, the float rises to a point of dynamic equiHbrium at which the pressure differential across the float balances the weight of the float less its buoyancy. The shape and weight of the float, the relative diameters of tube and float, and the variation of the tube diameter with elevation all determine the performance characteristics of the meter for a specific set of fluid conditions. A ball float in a conical constant-taper glass tube is the most common design it is widely used in the measurement of low flow rates at essentially constant viscosity. The flow rate is normally deterrnined visually by float position relative to an etched scale on the side of the tube. Such a meter is simple and inexpensive but, with care in manufacture and caHbration, can provide rea dings accurate to within several percent of full-scale flow for either Hquid or gas. [Pg.61]

Table 4 lists the specifications set by Du Pont, the largest U.S. producer of DMF (4). Water in DMF is deterrnined either by Kad Fischer titration or by gas chromatography. The chromatographic method is more rehable at lower levels of water (<500 ppm) (4). DMF purity is deterrnined by gc. For specialized laboratory appHcations, conductivity measurements have been used as an indication of purity (27). DMF in water can be measured by refractive index, hydrolysis to DMA followed by titration of the Hberated amine, or, most conveniendy, by infrared analysis. The specifications set the maximum vol % of solvent that may be added to the cylinder shell (measured by its water capacity). The volume of solvent also varies with the capacity of the cylinder. Cylinders in the 90—92% porosity range with a capacity above 9.1 kg of water may contain a maximum acetone charge of 43.4%, whereas those with 9.1 kg or less water capacity may contain up to 41.8 vol %.
