International Convention on the

IMO (2001). International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships. AFS/CONF/26. [Pg.237]

Given the toxic effects of TBT and TFT, efforts are now underway to halt their use in antifouling paints. The United States and European Union banned their use on boats smaller than 25 m circa 1990. In 2001, the United Nations adopted the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships, which calls for a worldwide ban on use of TBT in antifouling paints and is slated to come into force in 2008. As noted above, areas where the use of butyltin has been restricted have experienced a decline in butyltin concentrations. A similar decline has been observed in the incidence of imposex. [Pg.843]

At international level, the precautionary principle was first recognized in the World Charter for Nature, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1982 (EU 2000). It was subsequently incorporated into various international conventions on the protection of the environment. [Pg.45]

The following question then arises would it be sensible and acceptable to dispose of captured carbon dioxide in the oceans Such action would merely be accelerating a natural process and may not therefore fall under the international convention on the dumping of industrial wastes at sea. This is a matter for marine biologists, lawyers and politicians to debate. In terms of the technology, there are two broad approaches that might be adopted ... [Pg.92]

The 1969 CLC Convention was supplemented by another Convention in 1971, the International Convention on the Establishment of an Intemational Fund for Compensation for CHI Pollution Damage (Fund 71), which was intended to provide further eompensation to vietims of oil pollution since, although CLC 69 placed the burden of compensation on the ship owner, at the same time it limited the compensation payable. The Fund provided further compensation when the limits laid down by the CLC 69 were exceeded. The Convention entered into force in 1978. [Pg.21]

ICERD Art. 1 of the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination is important to minorities. Not only is national or ethnic origin part of the grounds upon which discriminatiOTi is prohibited, but positive discrimination as is commonly done in minority protection is explicitly allowed. A loft is introduced saying that the special measures have to cease once their objective has been achieved. The missing definiticHi of when the loft is reached did not lead to reservations and declarations by state parties. [Pg.31]

OPCW numbers are found in the "Handbook on Chemicals, version 2002," Appendix 2 in Declaration Handbook 2002 for the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction. OPCW numbers were developed to provide an easy method for tracking chemical warfare agents and precursors if CAS numbers were not available. [Pg.617]

A modernised version of the international 1972 London Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter (London Convention, 1972 London Protocol, 1996). [Pg.189]

In the 1970s the United Nations enacted controls to reduce litter by adopting two treaties (1) the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, aka the London Convention, and (2) the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, aka MARPOL. Raising public awareness of the POPs-related issues and encouraging public participation are also important elements of the Stockholm Convention. On the public awareness campaign, the HKSAR Government has launched, as a priority action item of the HKSARIP, a dedicated EPD thematic website on POPs (available at http //www.epd.gov.hk/ epd/english/international conventions/pops/pops main.html) and integrated the topic into the overall environmental protection education programme. [Pg.364]
