Political rights

Following the end of the French and Indian War, disputes over the taxation and treatment of the colonists as well as their political rights eventually boiled over into revolution. In 1777, British colonial undersecretary William Knox proposed that to forestall rebellion. [Pg.13]

In classical republicanism only a small proportion of the population were considered to have the independence required to be citizens. The economic independence that went with the ownership of land was often a key criterion. Ownership of a certain amount of land is now untenable as a criterion for citizenship rather, we give political rights and responsibilities to those who have the capacity to be independent in the sense of being independent practical reasoners (so children are excluded). However, it is not enough merely that citizens have the capacity to be independent practical reasoners, they have to be independent practical reasoners. This is not something for which there can be an objective test, and any attempt to carry out such a test would be contrary to the need to show respect for fellow citizens.11... [Pg.135]

What can one say today about that event Although I had dealt with this Holocaust denier and was well aware of the reality of the political misuse of the Auschwitz bludgeon against the political right or right-wing oriented people, this did not lead to my doubting the truth of the usual historical version of the National Socialist persecution of the Jews. The reason was that I could not, and cannot, take seriously any position maintained for obviously political reasons. [Pg.303]

Social and legal repression was a hint that the theme was a hot one, even when it was handled in a dry, scientific manner. On the advice of various people, I decided to postpone the publication of the document by a politically right-leaning publisher until after I had received my PhD degree. [Pg.318]

Each nation had a warrior chieftain, and as the nation was made up of different tribes, each tribe had its chieftain. In almost all cases this honour belonged to certain families. The heads of families who owned large herds and many slaves, and employed many poorer men, shared the authority of the leaders of the tribe, just as the latter shared their authority with the leaders of the nation when age, experience and military repute merited that honour. It is to this stage of society s development that we can trace the origin of slavery and of the inequality of political rights between grown men. [Pg.61]

A first landmark can be highlighted with the 56/1961 Law on Political, professional and working rights of women where it stated, gender itself cannot imply a limitation, cannot reduce women s capability to intervene in legal relations as well as in political rights . [Pg.406]
