Intent of the Code

Health and safety considerations are addressed jointly by an industrial hygienist and a safety specialist. These are the individuals that are "the authority having jurisdiction" as referenced by the National Fire Protection Association. Because of the unique nature of many research laboratories, it is not always possible to adhere strictly to the NFPA Codes and these individual must use their professional judgement in applying the intent of the Codes. [Pg.225]

Alternate materials or conditions of use may be permitted if diversified tests establish that the intent of the code has been satisfied. [Pg.115]

Type and Extent of Required Examination The intent of examinations is to provide the examiner and the inspector with reasonable assurance that the requirements of the code and the engineering design have been met. For F-nnmber 3, 4, and 5 materials. [Pg.1008]

Note that the intent of the ASME Code is to ensure that under those circumstances where a pressure relieving device can be isolated by a block valve from its pressure, or its discharge, that a responsible indhadual lock and unlock the block valve to the safe open position and that this individual remain at the block valve the entire time that the block valve is closed. [Pg.429]

Sometimes in the design of a BSL-4 facility, the full letter of health and safety codes/requirements for the protection of workers can not be met. This is where health and safety specialists must compromise and use their ingenuity to meet the intent of the requirements. For example, it is not always possible to provide a secondary means of egress from each area. Two change facilities are not cost effective or practical. A viable alternative is the use of airlocks with built-in liquid disinfection systems which are not hazardous to humans, but destroy the biohazard. These airlocks must be clearly identified as others are often used for transportation of equipment and other materials and contain hazardous disinfection systems. [Pg.232]

The zoomed-out, abstract views and the zoomed-in, detailed views must be clearly related. If you write, and we use the kwik-kache approach to cache information on the client, the link between this abstract intent and the code must be quite clear for it to survive the first few rounds of maintenance by new programmers. [Pg.239]

The expressed intent of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) originally enacted in 1970 is to assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.. . The act presently affects approximately 6 million workplaces and 70 million employees. Over 500 amendments to the Act have been introduced since the original legislation. A recent printing of the OSHA standards can be found in Title 29, Chapter XVII, Part 1910 of the Code of Federal Regulations. [Pg.60]

The thermodynamic databases that accompany most modeling codes were prepared intentionally to be separate from the codes. This means equilibrium constants are not hard-wired into the codes, which makes it much easier for users to change the values of the equilibrium constants in the database, or add/delete a reaction from the database without affecting the functionality of the codes. Many codes (e.g., phreeqc and EQ3/6) allow users to modify the equilibrium constants in the input file as well as in the database itself (see the Appendix). [Pg.75]

If the EPA agrees that the submitter has a bona fide intent to manufacture, import, or process a substance subject to a SNUR, it will notify the submitter if the chemical is subject to a SNUR and what section of the Code of Federal Regulations is relevant. The EPA is supposed to respond to a complete bona fide request within thirty days, but it is prudent to allow much more time for a response. [Pg.397]

The intent of the fire code as it apphes to the interior finish and to acceptable corrstruction practices is to prevent spread of a fire from one fire area to another, i.e., to make sure that the fire walls and other fire separation assembhes are constructed in such a way and of such materials as to maintain the fire resistance rating of the structure. When architects prepare the plans and specifications, they must include documentation for all required fire resistance ratings. [Pg.119]

Creep rupture from long term loading, creep-fatigue, and creep-buckling should also be addressed and procedures to do so within the Code have been around for some time now. In the past, at least some portions of the Code were limited to temperatures with the intent to avoid any time-dependent effects on the material, meaning that maximum permitted temperatures for materials were kept below the creep range. [Pg.8]

The acceptance criteria for the resolution of GSI 014 are that the high energy secondary piping systems shall be designed, manufactured, constructed, tested and inspected in accordance with accepted industry codes and standards, and shall meet the intent of the relevant guidance in Chapters 3 and 10 of the SRP (Reference 3), and Regulatory Guide 1.26 (Reference 4). [Pg.102]

The steam generators shall meet the requirements of Sections III and XI of the ASMS B PV Code for design, manufacture, test, and inspection. Also, steam generator design shall meet the intent of the guidance given in SRP Sections 5.4.2.1, Rev. 2 and 5.4.2.2, Rev. 1 (Reference 3) for steam generator materials, quality assurance, inservice tube inspection, and secondary side water chemistry. [Pg.132]

In summary, the secondary system, including the steam generators and condenser, meets the requirements specified in accepted industry codes and standards. In addition, steam generator materials and secondary side water chemistry meet the intent of the guidance given in SRP Section 5.4.2. Therefore, this issue is resolved for the System 80+ Standard Design. [Pg.133]

Namely, an encoder converts the bit stream from the source into another bit stream applied to the medium, with the conversion rule being called a code. (In the context of data compression, the use of a code has nothing to do with encryption it is not the intention of the encoder to hide the information (though the codes we shall discuss can be used for that purpose).) Correspondingly, a decoder converts the stored bit stream (xi, X2,...) into that presented to the sink. Ideally, of course, the total processing is such that the sink bit stream (vi, V2,...) is identical to that of the source. If the encoder is such that, for an appropriate decoder, this is indeed the case for every possible source sequence, then the code is called lossless or noiseless otherwise, it is lossy. [Pg.1620]

These limits are sometimes higher than the actual operating conditions. It is the intent of the design code that the limit on primary plus secondary stresses be applied to the actual operating conditions. For normal and upset conditions (sometimes indicated as levels A and B), the range of primary and secondary stresses, Pl + Pb + Q is not allowed to exceed 3S ... [Pg.44]

Detractors of the mandated inoculations make a number of claims, one that the vaccine has not been proven safe, and, invoking the Nuremberg Code, that using anthrax vaccine to protect against inhalation anthrax is experimen-tal. 7 These objections are baseless if only because the intent of the vaccine is preventative, but furthermore, in order to produce a study showing efficacy would involve challenging human subjects with deadly anthrax spores, which... [Pg.264]

The intent of the ANSI/ASME B31.8 code is to provide for the safety of the general public and to foster employee safety because safety is affected by basic design quality of materials and workmanship and requirements for testing, operation, and maintenance of gas transmission an( distribution facilities. The user of ANSI/ASME B31.8 is cautioned, however, that... [Pg.95]
