Insulation pipe applications

Compressible fluid flow occurs between the two extremes of isothermal and adiabatic conditions. For adiabatic flow the temperature decreases (normally) for decreases in pressure, and the condition is represented by p V (k) = constant. Adiabatic flow is often assumed in short and well-insulated pipe, supporting the assumption that no heat is transferred to or from the pipe contents, except for the small heat generated by fricdon during flow. Isothermal pVa = constant temperature, and is the mechanism usually (not always) assumed for most process piping design. This is in reality close to actual conditions for many process and utility service applications. [Pg.54]

Industrial usage includes a variety of tank, vessel, and piping insulation. The PIR foams are often preferred, because of their higher continuous service temperature (150 C). Cut and preshaped slabstock is used for many industrial plant piping applications. The foam spraying of tanks and pipelines is getting considerable attention in the Middle East and African markets. [Pg.18]

The easy processability of the polyolefins permits ready fabrication by nearly all conventional processes. This versatility, plus their low cost, low density, and excellent balance of physical properties, gives them wide applicability in many different end-use fields. We now encounter polyolefins in our daily lives in the form of fibers (e.g., indoor-outdoor carpeting, underwear, and upholstery), film (packaging), blow-molded containers (squeeze bottles, detergent bottles), injection molded articles (housewares, appliance housings, auto parts), and extrusions (wire insulation, pipe). Carbon black is used as a stabilizer in a limited number offormulations where color is not a criterioiL It not only absorbs light, but it can also react with free-radical species that might be formed. The weathering properties of polyethylene are improved by the incorporation of carbon blacks (at 2%-3% concentration). One of the techniques capable of being used "on stream" is the novel INCOTEST technique, see figure 2, which measures wall thickness of piping and vessels through an insulation layer with a maximum thickness of 10 centimetres. This system is based on pulsed eddy currents, was first developed in the United States, and is now being commercialised and extensively validated for a number of applications. [Pg.949]

Field coating of welds has always presented problems. Straw and jute with a greasy material was employed in 1910, but this later saponified in the soil. Industrial equipment is a continuing area of development for plastics. Pipes, pumps, valves and sight glasses, made from such materials as PVC, PTFE and poly-4-methylpent-l-ene, have become well established on account of their corrosion resistance. The nylons are used for such diverse applications as mine conveyor belts and main drive gears for knitting machines and paper-making equipment. These and other materials are widely used where such features as toughness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, non-stick properties, electrical insulation capability and transparency are of importance. [Pg.14]

In selecting an insulation product for a particular application, consideration should be given not only to its primary function but also to the many secondary functions, and often-unappreciated requirements, which the insulation of pipe or vessel may place on the insulation product.
