The authors would particularly like to thankjacques Robelin, head of the Department of Animal Breeding and Nutrition of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (National Institute for Agricultural Research, INRA) from 1994 to 2002, for financial support and constant encouragement during the creation of these tables. [Pg.8]

In Australia, at present there are few effective traffic safety advocates. Who might facilitate the creation of a constituency, a constituency that demands a new approach It clearly will not be the government Nor can the front line come from the bulk of traffic safety professionals, as they are anployed by the government. The role of academics is moot, as most depend on funds from the government transport institutions for their research nevertheless, we must seek better links between the ivory towers and the corridors of power. [Pg.158]

In the present time our organosilicon adsorbents found the practice application in such as fields such as, for example 1) the method of spectral-chemical determination of gold Clarke quantities in poor ores and rocks has been applied in analytic practice of geological establishments and research institutes 2) at the first time soi ption process was used in hydro-chemical analyze of fresh water. This method has been allowed to analyze of Baikal water 3) for purification metallurgical waters and waste solutions of chemical-metallurgical plants due to toxic elements 4) for creation the filters for extraction of rare elements, for example, uranium 5) for silver utilization from wasted of cinema-photo manufactory. This method has been applied to obtain the silver of high purity. [Pg.273]

The American Pharmaceutical Association also had hopes of developing a research endowment of its own at this time, and some of its leaders may have seen the proposed institute as a rival for funds. A.Ph.A. President George Beringer had called for the creation of an endowment fund for pharmaceutical research in his presidential address in 1914 (48). In August of 1917, the A.Ph.A. Council established a research fund (49), and shortly thereafter Amy was appointed Chairman of a newly-created research committee (50). Although it was not until early 1920 that the A.Ph.A. Executive Committee formally proposed the formation of a research endowment, with plans calling for the solicitation of funds from industry and other sources (51), it is likely that the idea of soliciting contributions for an endowment fund was already in the minds of some when the research fund and committee was established. ... [Pg.105]

Einstein was visiting the United States when Hitler came to power, so he accepted a position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1940. Although a lifelong pacifist, he wrote a letter to President Roosevelt warning of ominous advances in German nuclear research. This led to the creation of the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb and tested it in New Mexico in 1945. [Pg.5]

In April 1971, the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 1970 was enacted and resulted in the creation of the Oecupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The purpose of this Act is to ensure that workers are provided with workplaces free from recognized safety, health, and environmental hazards. OSHA is part of flie Department of Labor (DOL) and responsible for developing and enforcing rules to ensure workplace safety and health. NIOSH is a research agency, part of flie Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), under the Department of Health and Human Services. NIOSH is responsible for developing and establishing new and improved OSH standards and identify potential hazards of new work technologies and practices. [Pg.1301]

The two primary research organizations of the PHS, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), provide expertise and guidance in various areas of medical research and occupational safety and health. In the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Congress authorized the creation of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) under the CDC. NIOSH is charged with the primary responsibility for the development of new health and safety standards. This agency has no reg-... [Pg.277]
