Breeding: animal

Smith, T. E., Faulkes, C. G., and Abbott, D. H. (1997). Combined olfactory contact with the parent colony and direct contact with non breeding animals does not maintain suppression of ovulation in female naked mole-rats Heterocephalus glaber). Hormones and Behavior 31,277-288. [Pg.513]

Melatonin affects reproduction in seasonally breeding animals. In humans, findings of increased endogenous melatonin in hypogonadism and low concentrations in precocious puberty imply an interaction between melatonin and gonadotropins however, data on the effects of exogenous melatonin are limited (1). In a randomized study in 16 women, melatonin enhanced LH and FSH responses to submaximal GnRH stimuli in the follicular but not the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (24). [Pg.496]

Mendel in the mid-1800s the principles were used in breeding animals and plants to enhance desirable traits. Proteins were discovered to exist in 1800s, and DNA being responsible for carrying genetic information was proved in 1940s. [Pg.259]

Five 11-week old female Wistars (weight = 230 - 260 g) supplied by the Centre for Breeding Animal House, University of Queensland were used in this study. All surgical procedures were performed in accordance with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (2003). [Pg.305]

All reports should generally be checked independently by (ideally) two suitably qualified staff members. The laboratory should implement a policy regarding the provision of opinions and interpretation of data. The basis on which an opinion has been stated must be documented. An opinion or interpretation may include, but not be limited to, recommendations on how to use results, or information related to the pharmacology, metabolism, and pharmacokinetics of a substance. This is particularly important for classes of compounds for which the client/authority may not be aware of the latest developments or recent knowledge in the field, as is often the case, for instance, for natural hormones such as boldenone and nandrolone in breeding animals, compounds newly discovered to be naturally occurring such as thiouracil, and marker residues that may be unreliable such as semicarbazide as a marker for nitrofurazone abuse. °... [Pg.338]

General data requirements have been described (ISO, 2006 LEAP, 2014a). However, for fibre derived from animals there is a unique requirement to fully account for resource use and environmental emissions directly from all animals associated with the production of fibre. This may require accounting for multiple farms, for example, some breeding animals reared on a different farm than the main production farm or surplus animals raised off farm and shorn before being sold for meat processing. [Pg.228]

The key requirement is that all inputs and emissions associated with an equUib-rium animal population (including all classes and ages of breeding animals) are accounted for. The most complex aspect of this is obtaining an accurate estimate... [Pg.228]

Husbandry. Earm animal production is an economic venture, undertaken to produce food (meat, milk, and eggs) or other animal products, such as wool, hides, hair, and pelts. Through the process of animal husbandry, growers seek to create conditions that maximize production of animal products at the lowest cost. With advancing technology and improvements in breeds, animal production has evolved from extensive systems to increasingly intensive systems. [Pg.61]

It has also been discovered that kisspeptin plays a role in seasonal-breeding animals. Many mammals only become fertile during the annual breeding season, and this is controlled by the duration of daylight per day. [Pg.268]
