An adequate number of batches of each API should be tested at suitable intervals to determine an appropriate retest or expiration date. This generally includes samples from the first three commercial size batches, but fewer batches may be appropriate in the initial testing program if data from previous studies or from literature show that the API is stable for at least two years. For those biotechnological/biologic and other APIs having shelf-lives of one-year or less, stability samples should be obtained and tested monthly for the first three months, and at three-month intervals thereafter. 

After the initial test program, it was evident that only ultrasonic testing with a technique requiring contact with the main vessel could get the job done. 

Glass shop. This small shop is intended to be a service function for the expeirimenter. The room itself is relatively small but should be adequate for the initial testing program.

CHAPTER 14 INITIAL TEST PROGRAM AND ITAAC-DESIGN CERTIFICATION... 

The verification of operability begins after completion of subsystems construction with a verification that all drains go to the correct collecting destination. This is followed by the Initial Test Programs of Chapter 14, specifically tests 14.2.12.1.45 14.2.12.1.46 and 14.2.12.1.49. All instrumentation critical in determining RCS leakage is designed and located to be calibrated while the plant is operating. 

Initial verification of the reactor coolant system flow rate is made during the plant initial test program. Reactor coolant system flow rates are measured during the pre-core load hot functional tests and during the startup tests. The objective of these tests is to verify that the reactor coolant system flow rate meets the flow rate range of LCO 3.4.1 of the Tech-Specs (see Chapter 16 of Reference 6.1).

Westinghouse Electric Corp. initiated a program to develop air-cooled PAFC stacks, containing cooling plates at six-ceU intervals. Full size 100-kW stacks (468 cells, 0.12-m electrode area) were built, and a module containing four of these stacks was tested. An air-cooled stack operated at 0.480 MPa yielded a cell voltage of 0.7 V at 267 m A /cm (187 mW/cm ). Demonstration of this technology is plarmed for a site in Norway. 

Preliminary Estimates of Repeatability. Initial estimates of repeatabihty should be obtained before embarking on any significant test program. Such information may be available from previous testing if it is not, vaUd preliminary mns should be conducted at different times under supposedly identical conditions. If these mns result in large variabiUty in performance, the important variables that affect the results have not been identified, and further research may be needed before the proposed experiment can commence. 

It is difficult to plan a filtration leaf test program until one test has been run. In the case of a bottom-feed test, the first run is normally started with the intention of using a 30-s cake formation time. However, if the filtrate rate is very high, it is usually wise to terminate the run at the end of 15 s. Should the filtrate rate be very low, the initial form period should be extended to at least 1 min. If cake washing is to... 

Once the initial choice of promising separator types is made, representative hquid-solid samples should be obtained for preliminaiy tests. At this point, a detailed test program should be developed, preferably with the advice of a specialist.

Aside from the actions already initiated by EPA under Section 6 to restrict exposures to polychlorinated biphenyls and to chlorofluorocarbons in certain uses, no other actions have been taken against specific chemical substances, nor has an imminent hazard been identified for appropriate action. Less than a dozen proposed orders have been issued under Section 5(e) requesting further information to assess the risks of as many new substances. Perhaps 80 informal requests for further information on such substances have been made and satisfied voluntarily. Testing programs for a substantial number of existing substances have been started and more are planned. To summarize, the current status of assessment of toxicity in postnatal mammals, in response to the pediatric initiatives covered in FDAMA, is an extremely fluid situation. One needs to carefully consider a variety of factors in designing the study and should discuss proposed testing programs with the appropriate office at ODER.

The test programs which are summarized in detail in this section were usually not planned to test a causative mechanism. Rather, they were carried out to determine the effect of variables which were thought to be important in initiating the event. The results were normally reported only as explosions achieved or, conversely, not achieved. 

In addition to these full-scale tests, EPA has initiated a program to conduct extensive intermediate-scale incinerator studies, i.e., studies that would approximate the actual conditions that exist in full-scale incinerators but that at the same time would be close enough to the laboratory studies previously discussed to allow correlation of the results from both scales of operation ( ). The EPA Combustion Research Facility (CRF) has been constructed to conduct this program at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), Jefferson, Arkansas. 

Initial validation one test per day for the hrst 30 days of the operation of the system from a different location each day. The test program should cover all critical supply points. 

Considerable bias errors may be due to the preparation of standards, as well as inaccuracies associated with the actual measurements. Undoubtedly, care in the selection and initial testing of electrodes will improve the quality of results. Most important, however, is the unambiguous description of preparation and measurement procedures, and the adoption of routine analytical quality control. The quality of pH data, like those from any other analytical determination, will be greatly improved by strict adherence to a rigorously defined proven routine. Although implementing a program of quality control will decrease errors, it will not ensure the accuracy of the determination.
