Today s computer networks, open systems standards and the Internet enable people working in different areas of the supply chain to maintain constant contact. Since information transactions have become so easy, there is less of a need to restrict operations to within traditional organizational boundaries. These new capabilities offer the ability for supply chain parmers to share information in real time. This enables the partnering firms to hold lower inventories and incur fewer transactions costs. The Center for Integrated Operations (lO) in the Petroleum Industry is a research-based innovation centre that aims to develop new methods and tools for the integration of people, organizations, work processes and disciplines through new information and communication technology. For instance, lOs are being developed to improve capture of real-time safety barrier data and to process, visualize and share this information for closer onshore-offshore collaboration and more effective expert support. 

This section describes the role and types of information in a SC and then reviews the information sharing mechanisms from two aspects information communication technology (ICT) and ICT-based application. 

Ideally, the maintenance professional knows how to treat, share and communicate lessons learned within his or her work team and contribute to the rest of the organization (again, information technology can be of vital assistance here). Professionals know or are trained to translate minor events into generic issues. IT infrastructure flexibility refers to the extent to which systems (i.e. hardware, software, communication technologies, and database) are easily reconfigurable to support different business applications and services. IT infrastructure comprises information and communication technologies as well as shared technical platforms and databases (Ross et al. 1996 Weill et al. 1996 Bharadwaj 2000). The primary constituents of IT infrastructure are computing platform (hardware and operating systems), communications network, critical shared database, and core applications (Byrd and Turner 2000). IT infrastructure is the foundation of IT assets (i.e., technical and human assets) and services shared across a firm (Piccoli and Ives 2005). As a result, IT infrastructure provides shared foundation for the delivery of business applications and services (Broadbent and Weill 1997).
