In large companies, a separate department normally exists to carry out this and related important activities, known as Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). In a small company this will not be the case, where an external patent agent or consultant will be used. [Pg.97]

Whether there is access to an in house expert or use is made of an outside consultant, a Manager should have a working knowledge of patent law and its operation. Only when this is the case will it be possible to hold meaningful discussions with these experts. The principles and operation of patent law will be dealt with in greater depth in Section C, 2.1. [Pg.97]

The IPR people will provide advice on what may be said in public about a company s products and processes, i.e. in papers presented at external symposia by R D personnel. They will also advise on the use of trade names and marks in scientific papers and other such publications. [Pg.97]

When R D is planned in collaboration with other companies or external agencies, a joint agreement must be drawn up to cover all aspects of the ownership of any intellectual property that may arise. These agreements are written, with the R D Managers help, by the IP people. This will involve negotiations with their equivalents in the collaborating organisations. An example would be the ownership of IPR in the case of sponsored or joint research with academic institutions. [Pg.97]

R %P Managers must ensure that scientists have access to the widest range of high quality information that is affordable. [Pg.97]

Databases. Sites such as Bath Information and Data Services (BIDS) and web of Science (WOS) provide access to abstracts of recent publications use these to find relevant literature for specific topics. Access is via the websites at http //www.bids.ac.uk/ or http //www.webofscience.com you will need a username and password - check with your department or library. In the case of BIDS, it provides access to databases covering subjects from science, engineering and medicine to economics, politics, education and the arts. Specific databases offered include ISI citation indexes EMBASE (international biomedical information) INSPEC (physics, electronic engineering and computing) international bibliography of the social sciences (IBSS) The Royal Society of Chemistry databases and education databases. See also Table 46.2. [Pg.303]

Especially useful to chemists are Chemical Abstracts and Analytical Abstracts. Some databases can be accessed via the Internet, such as BIDS (Bath Information and Data Service), a UK service providing access to information from over 7000 periodicals (username and password required via your library). Each of these databases usually has its own easy-to-follow menu instructions. It is worthwhile to consider key words for your search beforehand to focus your search and save time. [Pg.317]

A most useful publication based on papers given at four postgraduate lectures on libraries and library services is Library Services for Chemists lithoprinted by the Department of Applied Chemistry of the Royal Melbourne Technical College (Melbourne, The College Press, 1960) and used there as a textbook on the use of the literature. Chapters include the literature of chemistry, specialized chemistry periodicals, searching for information on analytical procedures, making a major literature search, CSIRO libraries, the company special library, university, college, public, and professional society libraries, auxiliary library services, patents standards and punched-card systems, and the methods of science libraries. [Pg.40]

For an inquiring mind (which is an essential tool in the field of maintenance), sources of information outside the service department are available and include manufacturers, suppliers, trade associations, engineering institutions (e.g. plant, mechanical, electrical, etc.), consultants, and suppliers of maintenance systems, libraries, and technical journals and the Internet. [Pg.792]

DrugScope Information Library Service. Books on Cocaine. London DrugScope Information Library Service, updated September 2003. Also available online. URL http //wTvw.drugscope.org.Uk/wp/7/pdfs/Cocaine. pdf. Presents a good variety of literature and articles about cocaine and cocaine use, including works for young people. [Pg.135]

If a scientific library does not provide an online patent and literature service, the patent office library may be approached directly. Patent attorneys may also offer a patent search service. Furthermore, contacts with companies which are interested in the field may be established in order to use their patent information network. [Pg.94]

Many of the important sources of engineering information are subscription services. The American Chemical Society s Chemical Abstracts Service is the best source for chemical properties and reaction kinetics data. Chemical abstracts can be searched online through the SciFinder subscription service (www.cas.org). This is available in most university libraries. [Pg.430]
