Good variety

Whereas the general office community reaped the benefits (and endured the pain) of the rise of the personal computer, the scientific and technical market was forced to wait. Chemists used spreadsheets and suffered through word processors that did not know what a chemical stmcture was. However, there is now a good variety of personal productivity tools that have been designed specifically for the chemist.

A recent method for the synthesis of the indolizine skeleton is represented by a three-component reaction between a-bromo ketones 16, pyridine 17, and ethyl propiolate or diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. These three reagents, under microwave irradiation and catalysis by basic alumina, afforded a good variety of 3-aroyl indolizines 18 <20030L435> (Scheme 4). 

In environmental analytical applications where analyte concentrations, e.g. surfactants or their metabolites, are quite low, extraction and concentration steps become essential. Solid phase extraction (SPE) with cartridges, disks or SPME fibres (solid phase micro extraction) because of its good variety of SP materials available has become the method of choice for the analysis of surfactants in water samples in combination with FIA as well as LC—MS analysis. SPE followed by sequential selective elution provides far-reaching pre-separations if eluents with different polarities and their mixtures are applied. The compounds under these conditions are separated in the MS spectrometer by their m/z ratios providing an overview of the ionisable compounds contained in a sample. Identification in the sense it has been mentioned before, however, requires the generation of fragments. 

This UV radiation is converted into visible radiation by means of the fluorescence of the phosphor powder coating. The phosphor material uses the UV radiation as an excitation source and produces fluorescent emission in the visible region, with a broad spectrum to give off the white light that we can see. A good variety of combinations of phosphors are used (Shionoya and Yen, 1999). The principal field of application of fluorescent lamps is general lighting, for which they constitute efficient devices. 

Figure 2.18 shows the range covered by different tunable solid state laser systems based on transition metal ions. The 80/20 rule is one of the best ways to measure variety. What this rule states is that 20% of causes contribute to 80% of the results. The 20% of the businesses, customers, employees, processes, facilities, and products that contribute to 80% of the revenues, economic surplus, and cash flow represent good variety. The 20% of the business, customers, employees, processes, facilities, products, and suppliers that contribute to 80% of the economic losses and unproductive assets represent bad variety. 

We need to have measures that identify how much of our products constitute good variety. Every product that is introduced needs to be designed, developed, and marketed. It also needs plant and equipment to manufacture it, and the infrastructure to distribute it. A good proportion of this is fixed costs that have to be recovered. A good way to measure the extent of good variety is to find the number of products that have earned money to recover all these fixed costs (over and above the variable costs incurred to sell each unit). This is the % of products that have crossed the fixed cost threshold.
