O Primary peritonitis develops in up to 25% of patients with alcoholic cirrhosis.3 Patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) average one episode of peritonitis every 2 years.4 Secondary peritonitis may be caused by perforation of a peptic ulcer traumatic perforation of the stomach, small or large bowel, uterus, or urinary bladder appendicitis pancreatitis diverticulitis bowel infarction inflammatory bowel disease cholecystitis operative contamination of the peritoneum or diseases of the female genital tract such as septic abortion, postoperative uterine infection, endometritis, or salpingitis. Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of intraabdominal infection. In 1998, 278,000 appendectomies were performed in the United States for suspected appendicitis.5... [Pg.1130]

Neostigmine should not be used when the intestine or urinary bladder is obstructed, when peritonitis is present, when the viability of the bowel is doubtful, or when bowel dysfunction results from inflammatory bowel disease. [Pg.132]

Gl obstruction (Concerts only) Because the Concerts tablet is nondeformable and does not appreciably change shape in the Gl tract, do not administer to patients with pre-existing severe Gl narrowing (eg, small bowel inflammatory disease, short gut syndrome because of adhesions or decreased transit time, history of peritonitis, cystic fibrosis, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, Meckel s diverticulum). [Pg.1155]

Radiographic imaging studies evaluate the extent of disease involvement. A chest x-ray should be performed to rule out the presence of metastatic spread to the lungs. A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis is often performed to evaluate hepatic and retroperitoneal involvement and occult abdominal and pelvic disease, and to determine the depth of tumor penetration into the bowel wall and/or invasion to adjacent organs. Detection of lymph node involvement with either smdy is limited by the difficulty of distinguishing inflammatory or reactive lymph nodes from those infiltrated with tumor. Because CT scans may not adequately detect peritoneal seeding, small distant lymph node metastasis, or liver metastasis in colon cancer, an occasional patient may... [Pg.2394]

Not every solid lesion in a postoperative patient means ovarian cancer recurrence. The combination of CA-125 and a baseline imaging study usually aids in the differential diagnosis. Postoperative hematomas, adhesions between bowel loops, or locahzed trapped fluid may mimic recurrent disease. Benign forms of diffuse peritoneal thickening such as a result of postoperative inflammatory complications or bacterial peritonitis cannot be differentiated from peritonitis carcinomatosa. Furthermore, chemical peritonitis following intraperitoneal chemotherapy also results in diffuse peritoneal thickening [32]. [Pg.254]
