Aloe vera is well known for its healing properties. It has been used for centuries to heal a variety of conditions, such as burns, wounds, irritated skin, and bug bites. Regarding wound healing, many beneficial properties of aloe vera gel has been reported including the abilities to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, prevent itching, prevent bacterial, fungal and viral growth, and enhance blood flow [60-63]. Additionally, aloe vera is widely used in cosmetics, food, and dietary applications. [Pg.510]

Pentoxifylline has been used in humans in a variety of inflammatory and fibrotic conditions. The mechanism is not fully known pentoxifylline blocks the TGF-beta 1-mediated pathway of inflammation, prevents deposition of collagen type I, and acts as a non-specific PDE inhibitor. Valente et al. (2003) have demonstrated that both sildenafil and pentoxifylline reduce the plaque size in tunical fibrosis induced by injection of transforming growth factor (TGF) beta-1. Encouraged by pentoxifylline s observed suppression of collagen production in Peyronie s cells in tissue culture as well as its efficacy in other human fibrotic disorders, we have been offering patients treatment with pentoxifylline as an option for Peyronie s disease since 2002 (unpublished data). [Pg.57]

Foams are used industrially and are important in rubber preparations (foamed-latex) and in fire fighting. The foam floats as a continuous layer across the burning surface, so preventing the evolution of inflammable vapours. Foams are also used in gas absorption and in the separation of proteins from biological fluids. See anti-foaming agents. [Pg.180]

These steioids aie capable of preventing or suppressing the development of the sweUing, redness, local heat, and tenderness which characterize inflammation. They inhibit not only the acute symptoms of the inflammatory process, such as edema, fibrin deposition, and capillary dilatation, but also the chronic manifestations. There is evidence that glucocorticoids induce the synthesis of a protein that inhibits phosphoHpase A 2 (60), diminishing the release of arachidonic acid from phosphoHpids (Fig. 2), thereby reducing chemotaxis and inflammation. [Pg.388]

In 1956 selenium was identified (123) as an essential micronutrient iu nutrition. In conjunction with vitamin E, selenium is effective iu the prevention of muscular dystrophy iu animals. Sodium selenite is adrninistered to prevent exudative diathesis iu chicks, a condition iu which fluid leaks out of the tissues white muscle disease iu sheep and infertility iu ewes (see Eeed ADDITIVES). Selenium lessens the iacidence of pneumonia iu lambs and of premature, weak, and stillborn calves controls hepatosis dietetica iu pigs and decreases muscular inflammation iu horses. White muscle disease, widespread iu sheep and cattle of the selenium-deficient areas of New Zealand and the United States, is insignificant iu high selenium soil areas. The supplementation of animal feeds with selenium was approved by the U.S. EDA iu 1974 (see Eeed additives). Much of selenium s metaboHc activity results from its involvement iu the selenoproteia enzyme, glutathione peroxidase. [Pg.337]

The so-called El-emission class describes a wood panel presenting formaldehyde emission which is low enough to prevent any danger, irritation or inflammation of the eyes, nose and mouth mucous membranes. However, it is important that not only the boards themselves, but also the veneering and carpenter s adhesive resins, laquers, varnishes and other sources of formaldehyde are under control, since they also might contribute to the mixture steady state formaldehyde concentration [9]. Table 3 gives an overview on some European regulations. However, it is necessary here to introduce the principal types of composite wood products, especially panels, that are produced in this industry ... [Pg.1044]

In the vasculature, ANG H not only increases contraction of smooth muscle cells, but is also able to induce vascular injury. This can be prevented by blocking NFkB activation [3] suggesting a link between ANG II and inflammation processes involved in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis (see below). Thus, ACE inhibitors not only decrease vascular tone but probably also exert vasoprotective effects. [Pg.9]

These drugp possess anti-inflammatory activity and are used for inflammatory conditions, such as allergic conjunctivitis, keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, and inflammation of the iris. Corticosteroids also may be used after injury to the cornea or after corneal transplants to prevent rejection. [Pg.625]

Salicylic acid reduces inflammation, including inflammation of the arteries. In arteries it can work to prevent hardening and narrowing. [Pg.167]
