Conjunctivitis allergic

The mast cell stabilizers currently for ophthalmic use are nedocromil and pemirolast. These drugp are used for the prevention of eye itching caused by allergic conjunctivitis. The mast cell stabilizers act by inhibiting the antigen-induced release of inflammatory mediators (eg, histamine) from human mast cells. 

These drugp possess anti-inflammatory activity and are used for inflammatory conditions, such as allergic conjunctivitis, keratitis, herpes zoster keratitis, and inflammation of the iris. Corticosteroids also may be used after injury to the cornea or after corneal transplants to prevent rejection. 

Use a step-care approach for treatment of allergic conjunctivitis.

If mast cell stabilizers or multiple-action agents are not successful, a trial of a topical NSAID is appropriate. Ketorolac is the only approved topical agent for ocular itching. NSAIDs do not mask ocular infections, affect wound healing, increase intraocular pressure, or contribute to cataract formation like the topical corticosteroids. However, for allergic conjunctivitis, topical ketorolac is not as effective as olopatadine or emedas-tine in trials.15 Full efficacy of ketorolac takes up to 2 weeks.17... 

Symptoms include clear rhinorrhea, sneezing, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, allergic conjunctivitis, and pruritic eyes, ears, or nose. 

Levocabastine (Livostin) and olopatadine (Patanol) are ophthalmic antihistamines that can be used for allergic conjunctivitis that is often associated with allergic rhinitis. However, systemic antihistamines are usually effective for allergic conjunctivitis, making an ocular product unnecessary. They may be a logical addition to nasal glucocorticoids when ocular symptoms occur. 

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva and probably the most widespread form of ailment in this tissue. Allergic conjunctivitis was most intensely aggravated at 1 ppm chloroform. At higher doses (10 and 100 ppm) the aggravation was still noticeable, yet less significant. At 1,000 ppm chloroform, the aggravating effect was not present. Blood chloroform concentrations increased as the concentration in drinking water increased from 0.01 to 1,000 ppm.
