Magnesium is used industrially as an alloy material with aluminum. They both have low density and decrease the total weight of whatever object they are used to make. They were used in naval vessels to decrease weight and increase speed however, when hit by a missile or torpedo, the alloy was flammable — again demonstrating the high reactivity of the alkali earth metals. [Pg.179]

Phosphoric acid is used as an intermediate in the production of animal feed supplements, water treatment chemicals, metal surface treatments, etching agent, and personal care products such as toothpaste. It is used as a catalyst in the petroleum and polymer industry. Phosphoric acid is used in food as a preservative, an acidulant, and flavor enhancer it acidifies carbonated drinks such as Coca Cola and Pepsi, giving them a tangy flavor. Phosphoric acid is used as a rust remover and metal cleaner. Naval Jelly is approximately 25% phosphoric acid. Other uses for phosphoric acid include opacity control in glass production, textile dyeing, rubber latex coagulation, and dental cements. [Pg.220]

Fibre-reinforced thermoplastics, such as glass fibre-reinforced nylon, are increasingly used as substitute for wood, metallic or ceramic materials in applications for which high strength and temperature are not decisive parameters. They are being incorporated into components in the automotive, naval, sport and leisure industries due to the potential of reduced production costs of lighter parts and recycling possibilities. [Pg.399]

VE resins can be used for all possible applications discussed for UPE resins. Specifically, VE resins have replaced metals and UPE-based ERP for corrosion-resistant applications. Applications include use in tanks, piping and ducts primarily for handling dilute acids, solvents and fuels, corrosion-resistant mixing vessels, precipitation vessels, scrubbers and process columns. In electrical industries, VE resin-based ERP are used to make components for electrcity generating stations, transmission and distribution, televisions, and antennae. They are also used for making electrical maintenance equipment such as ladders, and booms. Better water resistance makes them suitable for use in air conditioners, humidifiers and other household appliances. VE resins perform better in underwater applications than epoxy resins. Thus VE resins are extensively used for marine applications. Examples are hull construction of various types of sail and motor boats, fishing boats, and naval vessels. [Pg.102]

Epoxy resins are widely used as adhesives, surface coatings, encapsulates and casting materials. They are used in industrial tooling applications to produce moulds, master models, laminates, castings, fixtures, and other industrial production aids. This plastic tooling replaces metal, wood and other traditional materials, and generally improves the efficiency and lowers the overall cost or shortens the lead-time for many industrial processes. Epoxy resins are extensively used as a binder for marine paints, which is required to protect the naval structure from the corrosive marine environment. [Pg.180]
