The first limited list proposals were annoimced in November 1984 and proposed that a list of 31 products was adequate to meet all clinical needs in the seven therapeutic areas of indigestion remedies, laxatives, analgesics, cold and cough remedies, vitamin preparations, tonics and benzodiazepines. In the event, when the proposals became operational in April 1985, the initial list had been expanded to 129 products, and later to 160 products. The remaining products reimbursable on the NHS could only be dispensed if prescribed by their generic as opposed to their brand names. 

A common situation involving neutralisation of an acid is when you suffer from indigestion. This is caused by a build-up of acid in your stomach. Normally you treat it by taking an indigestion remedy containing a substance which will react with and neutralise the acid.

When starting a SSRI, the abrupt increase in serotonin may cause side effects. In the brain, the short-term effects include headache, sleep disturbance, nervousness, anxiety, and tremulousness. The digestive system effects include nausea, loose stools, decreased appetite, and indigestion. Most of these effects are mild and shortlived or can be managed with over-the-counter remedies. Nausea, for example, can be minimized by taking a SSRI after meals. These effects are also commonly seen with venlafaxine and duloxetine, atypical antidepressants that block serotonin reuptake like the SSRIs.

Catnip contains nepetalactone, a volatile oil similar to that found in valerian root. It acts as a mild sedative to relieve migraines, menstrual cramps, tension, and anxiety. Many consider catnip effective in treating flatulence and indigestion others regard it as a diuretic. Ozarks use catnip to treat aching teeth. A weak catnip tea is a traditional remedy to help soothe colicky babies. 

Ajowan seed has been popular from ancient times for its use in folk medicines. The seeds contain an essential oil with 50% thymol, which is a strong germicide, antispasmodic and fungicide. Thymol is also used in toothpaste and perfumery. It is used in a steeped liquid form against diarrhoea and flatulence. In India, the seeds are used as a household remedy for indigestion and colic and are used in poultices to relieve asthma and arthritis. Thymol isolated from the oil is a powerful antiseptic and an ingredient in a number of skin ointments/powders, deodorants, mouthwashes, toothpastes and gargles.

Commercial products can be recommended by homoeopaths or self-selected by patients for well-recognised conditions even though this might not be approved of by classical homoeopaths. Popular remedies would include Arnica for bruises. Thuja for verrucas and warts. Calcium Carbonate for rheumatism. Sulphur for indigestion. Belladonna for headache, Pulsatilla for cystitis and Bryonia for constipation. 

Podophyllin, Aloes, and Iron Pills. Take 3 grains podophyllin, 15 grains socotrine aloes, 15 grains extract of nox-vomica, 45 grains d sulphate of iron, 10 drops oil of cloves, and sufficient syrup of gum-arabic to make into a mass. Divide mto 30 pills. Dose. 1 pill immediately before each meal. A good remedy for indigestion, with costiveness.

Black pepper figures in remedies in Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani medicine in India for such illnesses as constipation, diarrhea, earache, gangrene, heart disease, hernia, hoarseness, indigestion, insect bites, insomnia, joint pain, liver problems, lung disease, oral abscesses, sunburn, tooth decay, and toothaches. Black pepper was relied upon to treat specific conditions such as diarrhea and fevers, but it appears that the extensive, generalized use was to enhance the effects of many herbal remedies [3].
