This section concludes with a reminder that, in addition to the hypohalous acids HOX and metal hypohalites M(OX) , various covalent (molecular) hypohalites are known. A second rich collection of references on the polymorphic behaviour of organic materials is the compilation by Deffet (1942). This contains information and references to primary sources on 1188 substances that exhibit polymorphism at atmospheric pressure and another 32 that exhibit polymorphic behaviour at elevated pressures. A typical entry contains the number of reported polymorphic forms, their melting points, temperature(s) of transition, crystal system, some physical properties, and literature references, of which there are nearly 1000. Substances are organized by empirical formula with an index organized by compound name (in French). 

Inverted forms of the chemical names (parent index headings) are used for most entries in the alphabetically ordered index. Organic names are listed at the parent based on Rule C-10, Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry, 1979 Edition. Coordination compounds, salts and ions are listed once at each metal or central atom parent index heading. Simple salts and binary compounds are entered in the usual uninverted way, e.g.. Sulfur oxide (SxO), Lira-nium( V) chloride (UCL). 

From the dawn of organic chemistry as such to the present time there exists a continuous record in fonnula index form (Table II) of the compounds of this large branch of chemistry. Inorganic chemistry is not so fortunate. [Hoffman (12) indexed organic compounds by formula to 1909.] From this date to 1920, when Chemical Abstracts began indexing by formula, there is no compilation of inorganic compounds by formula.

Index organisms , to assess potentially dangerous contamination (such as Escherichia coli to indicate fecal pollution and consequently that a vast array of potential pathogens might be present).

The presence of index organisms in numbers exceeding given limit values indicates the possible occurrence of ecologically related pathogenic organisms. An example of this is the examination of a food for Escherichia coli to assess the probable presence of salmonellae.
