Hydrogen index (HI) An expression of the relative abundance of hydrogen with respect to carbon derived from RockEval pyrolysis of sedimentary organic matter. The hydrogen index is derived from measurement of the amount of hydrocarbon-rich material released by Rock-Eval pyrolysis of organic matter, divided by the TOC concentration of the sediment sample. It is a proxy for the atomic H/C ratio of organic matter. 

Classification of the organic derivatives of the transition metals by the type of ligands is now more appropriate than classification by Periodic Group. This arises since the chemistry of a given class tends to be dominated more by the nature of the organic group - particularly when this effectively occupies several co-ordination positions - than by the metal itself. In order to compensate, to some extent, for this underestimate of metal influence, classification of metal compounds by the metal is given in the subject index. 

Location of the compound within a class (or homologous series) of compounds. Reference to the literature or to tables of the physical properties of the class (or classes) of organic compounds to which the substance has been assigned, will generally locate a number of compounds which boil or melt within 6° of the value observed for the unknown. If other physical properties e.g., refractive index and density for a hquid) are available, these will assist in deciding whether the unknown is identical with one of the known compounds. In general, however, it is more convenient in practice to prepare one, but preferably two, crystalhne derivatives of the substance.

Comninellis and Plattner [287,287a, 288] have developed a simple method for estimating the facility of the electrochemical oxidation of organic species based on a newly defined electrochemical oxidizability index (EOI) and the degree of oxidation using the electrochemical oxygen demand (EOD). Electrochemical oxidizability index for various benzene derivatives obtained at Pt/Ti and Sn02-ABB-anodes are listed in Table 23. 

It was pointed out in Chapter 1 that, after the azo class, anthraquinone derivatives form the next most important group of organic colorants listed in the Colour Index. The major application groups are vat dyes, disperse dyes and acid dyes (Table 1.1). 

In the Colour Index both conventional sulphur dyes and their leuco counterparts are allocated the same Cl constitution number a different number is given to the related solubilised version. Thus, for example, Cl Sulphur Black 1 and Cl Leuco Sulphur Black 1 have the reference Cl 53185 whereas Cl Solubilised Sulphur Black 1 appears under Cl 53186. Because of the complexity of the final products, sulphur dyes are classified according to the chemical structure of the organic starting material that predominates in the manufacturing process. Typical intermediates include aromatic amines, with or without nitro and phenolic groups, and diphenylamine derivatives.
