The refractive index of micro-organisms differs only slightly from the medium in which they are growing, and it is therefore necessary to stain them or use special methods such as dark-field illumination to see them. 

In the European Standard for protective gloves against chemicals and micro-organisms, one of the requirements is that the protective effect for a certain combination of protective glove/test chemical should be presented as protection index. Protection index is based on breakthrough time measured at constant contact with the test chemical (European Standard EN 374-1,1994) (Table 4).

A and IV.B.l the organization of this indexing array into an element-wise sorted array has far-reaching consequences on computational efficiency and, above all, on vectorization and parallelization.
