Importance of chemistry

We hope that when you complete this course you too will be convinced of the importance of chemistry in today s world. We should, however, caution you on one point. Although we will talk about many of the applications of chemistry, our main concern will be with the principles that govern chemical reactions. Only by mastering these principles will you understand the basis of the applications referred to in the preceding paragraphs. 

The report discusses the importance of chemistry in medicine, the need for cooperative research in this area, the lack of adequate facilities in the United States, the superior situation in other countries, and so on. No specific solution is proposed, however, just a plea for cooperative research (73). The efforts of the Chemical Warfare Service, with which several members of the Committee had been associated, were pointed to as an example of productive cooperative research between physical and biological scientists (as discussed by Daniel Jones in his paper in this volume). The importance of chemistry in other reactor circuits will be described in the next two papers by Balakrishnan and Lister (11) and Shoesmith (12). 

The importance of chemistry to the nuclear power industry is now well recognized. Chemical control in water circuits is an accepted part of the operating requirements of nuclear generating stations, as it is for modern fossil-fired stations. While there have been major advances in knowledge of the chemistry of aqueous systems at temperatures above lOQoC, there is still a need for further work. As we improve our understanding of thermodynamics and kinetics of solid-aqueous reactions and the effect of radiation on them, we can expect further advances in controlling radiation fields in reactor circuits and in minimizing iron deposition in GS plants. 

The works of these practical chemists of the sixteenth century manifest a more serious appreciation of the dignity and importance of chemistry in its relation to the practical arts, and had a great stimulating influence on all chemical workers. It will be noticed however that with the exception of Paracelsus these men were not greatly interested in the problems of chemical philosophy. To the extent that they refer to chemical theory they accept the conventional Aristotelian or Arabian concepts. Paracelsus by the- impression made by his three principles indeed did much to shatter the blind faith in the ancient theories and to pave the way for later constructive speculation. Although black powder has done immeasurable good through its civil uses, it has nevertheless been regarded as an evil discovery because of the easy and unsportsmanlike means which it provides for the destruction of life. Boerhaave, more than two centuries ago, wrote in the modern spirit on the importance of chemistry in war and condemned black powder2 in a manner 1 Oesper, J. Chem. Education, 16, 305-306 (1939).

Yet another way to use this textbook is to use polymers as the examples for discussions or explanation of concepts covered in a chemistry course. Chapter 1 can be used in conjunction with the first chapter of any textbook where a discussion of What is chemistry occurs. A teacher wants students to know the importance of chemistry in their everyday lives and the good things that have been the result of chemistry, but it is also necessary to discuss some of the problems that have arisen because of the careless use of chemistry. (You can also refer to Chapter 9, Disposal, Degradation, And Recycling Bioplastics, for another angle on responsible chemistry.)... 

Chemistry has made an impact on almost every aspect of daily life from toothpaste to life-saving medicines. The essential feature of this central science is synthesis. Despite the great success and the importance of chemistry to life quality, its public image has deteriorated and in the twenty-first century, we can expect the drive toward cleaner technologies. 

This reading simply explains the importance of chemistry in our lives. You can see chemistry in every part of our life. For example, while preparing this textbook we used pencils, pens and papers. To type it, computers were used and printers to print its pages with different inks (paints) paper and printing machines were also utilized. All materials and machines used in the printing of this book are also the products of chemicals. In other words, they are produced with the help of different elements or/and compounds. All these are the subjects of chemistry. Yet another example, what if you were to become ill, how would your ailment be diagnozed ... 

This text maintains a student-friendly approach without being patronizing. In addition, to demonstrate the importance of chemistry in real life, I have incorporated throughout the book a number of applications and recent advances in essay form. 

This chapter is divided into four parts. First I shall discuss Boerhaave s changes of mind and the growing importance of chemistry for his medicine. Related is the question what made Boerhaave s chemistry different from phys-... 

In addition, we may observe that the principles for green chemistry (see later) are of general validity, but their implementation was often questionable and/or with limited impact. We note, for example, that no relationship could be seen between the growing of publications on green chemistry (Figure 1.1.) and public perception of importance of chemistry (Figure 1.3). This is more evidence as to why a further step is necessary, for example, to pass from green to sustainable industrial chemistry. 

To achieve these ends the new curricula placed particular emphasis on such concepts as periodicity and the mole. They also incorporated some major chemical ideas underlying the structure of materials, chemical bonding kinetics and energetics. These are some tunes referred to as concept-based which indicates the attention given to the principles of chemistry in their development. To make aware the students about the importance of chemistry topics like plastics, synthetic fibres, elastomers, detergents, drugs and insecticides were also included. 

A new series of compounds, a,a -alkanebis-thiotrifluoro-propanones was synthesized and showed excellent in vitro and moderate in vivo inhibition of the insect juvenile hormone esterase from the fifth instar larvae of Trichoplusia ni (cabbage looper). The potency of the above series was also screened for its ability to inhibit other esterases of toxicological and pharmacological significance. Trifluoroketones are discussed as an example of the importance of chemistry in biotechnology approaches. 

While we have stressed the importance of chemistry to the health-related professions, this book was written for aU students that need a one or two semester introduction to chemistry. Our focus on the relationship between chemistry, the environment, medicine, and the function of the human body is an approach that can engage students in a variety of majors. 

On his way to the Liverpool meeting, Liebig took the opportunity to visit many factories of soda, sulfuric acid, soap, steel, and paper. He became more aware of the importance of chemistry in every sector of industry and of its crucial importance to the prosperity of a country, chemistry, the real mother of every industry (Liebig 1838). He considered chemistry the most worthy science and the most useful matter of education If a person well trained in pure chemistry, but completely inexperienced, happens to manage soda, sulfuric acid, or sugar factories,... 

Although the public concern about chemical warfare was significant, the story was not completely negative. The dramatic rise in the number of American-born and educated chemists attested to the increasing acceptance of chemistry as an academic subject and career choice. The appetite among publishers for popular science titles such as Morrison s also reflected a growing public interest in science. Man in a Chemical World joined a substantial list of other popular books on chemistry from the era that tried to make clear the importance of chemistry. These included multiple editions of Floyd L.
