Hydrofluoric acid Hydrogen

The manufacture of cryoHte is commonly iategrated with the production of alumina hydrate and aluminum trifluoride. The iatermediate stream of sodium aluminate from the Bayer alumina hydrate process can be used along with aqueous hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen fluoride kiln gases, or hydrogen fluoride-rich effluent from dry-process aluminum trifluoride manufacture. [Pg.144]

As a result of variation shown in toxicity, the evaluation of technologies applicable for discharge control, and treatment by some compounds within the industrial chemicals, the SIC 281 groups are further subdivided into 11 subcategories.23 They are aluminum fluoride, chlor-alkali, chrome pigments, copper sulfate, hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen cyanide, nickel sulfate, sodium bisulfate, sodium... [Pg.919]

Simons An electrochemical method for fluorinating organic compounds. First developed by J. H. Simons at Pennsylvania State College in 1941 but not announced until 1948 for reasons of national security. A direct current is passed through a solution of an organic compound in anhydrous hydrofluoric acid hydrogen is evolved at the cathode and the organic material is fluorinated at the anode. [Pg.245]

The properties of hydrofluoric acid.—Hydrogen fluoride is soluble in water between 0° and 19 4° in all proportions. The aq. soln. forms hydrofluoric acid the more cone, solutions fume strongly in air. The specific gravity of aq. soln. increases with increasing concentration of hydrogen fluoride up to a maximum 1 262 with soln. containing 75 93 per cent, of HF, and then decreases to unity as the concentration increases. The numbers in Table I are calculated from those of J. L. C. Eckelt,8 and of E. G. Hill and A. P. Sirkar. The table shows that the sp. gr. of a 63 per cent. soln. is 1 246 at 0°. Table II is due to C. Winteler. The contamination of the soln. with hydrofluosilicic acid greatly increases the density. [Pg.130]

Vanadium Disilicide, VSia, is prepared by reducing a mixture of vanadium trioxide and silicon with magnesium vanadium pentoxide can also be employed with the addition of fluorspar to the mixture.12 Gin used a mixture of the pentoxide, silica, and coke.18 Vanadium disilicide is a very stable compound it forms metallic prisms which melt at 1655° C., have a specific gravity of 4-42, and are hard enough to scratch glass. It is attacked by hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen chloride gas, and fused alkalis. [Pg.107]

Hydrofluoric acid, hydrogen fluoride and fluorine are less corrosive to many metals and alloys than their own halide counterpart. The nickel-copper alloys, typified by Monel alloy 400 have excellent resistance to hydrofluoric acid corrosion. Stainless steels, such as 316, suffered severe transgranular corrosion. Table 9.23 summarizes the corrosion resistance of nickel alloys and stainless steels in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride [37]. The weakness of stainless steel to anhydrous hydrogen fluoride corrosion is shown in Table 9.23. [Pg.515]
