Human T-cell lymphotrophic viruses

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV lymphadenopathy-associated virus, LAV human T-cell lymphotrophic virus type 3, HTLV III) is responsible for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS see Chapter 3). Because of the hazard and difficulties of growing the virus outside humans, a different approach has to be examined for determining viral sensitivity to disinfectants.

Among the known human retroviruses are human T-cell lymphotrophic virus (FITLY), which causes a form of leukemia, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Zidovudine is a synthetic thymidine analog with potent activity against a broad spectrum of retroviruses including HIV-1, HlV-2, and human T-ceU lymphotrophic viruses (HTLV) 1 and II.
