The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV lymphadenopathy-associated virus, LAV human T-cell lymphotrophic virus type 3, HTLV III) is responsible for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS see Chapter 3). Because of the hazard and difficulties of growing the virus outside humans, a different approach has to be examined for determining viral sensitivity to disinfectants. [Pg.247]

Cellulitis is characterized by erythema and edema of the skin. The lesion, which may be extensive, is painful and nonelevated and has poorly defined margins. Tender lymphadenopathy associated with lymphatic involvement is common. Malaise, fever, and chills are also commonly present. There is usually a history of an antecedent wound from minor trauma, an ulcer, or surgery. [Pg.527]

In 1983, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was isolated from a patient with lymphadeno-pathy, and by 1984 it was demonstrated clearly to be the causative agent of AIDS. The virus, which belongs to the lentivirus subfamily of the large family of retroviruses (Retroviridae), was formerly called lymphadenopathy associated virus (LAV), human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) type III, and AIDS-associated retrovirus (ARV). [Pg.387]

The significance of these results is difficult to assess as it is based on small numbers. As with other studies 12 ) which came to the same conclusion, this was a retrospective analysis. Long-term DPH therapy (range of 7—23 years) resulted in malignant lymphoma in 4 cases, in one of whom there was preceding leukopenia and in another thrombocytopenia 2 patients were successfully treated with chemo- or radiotherapy (19 ). DPH therapy may also result in unifocal lymphadenopathy associated with marked tenderness (5 ). [Pg.51]
