Another sbirro was holding a honey-colored cat by the tail. It had been almost blown apart by a firearm at close range, so that only its backbone still held its two halves together, and both were badly burned. It was, needless to say, very dead. It stank up the room. [Pg.121]

The susceptibility of honey bee larvae to American foulbrood was described by Woodrow in 1941 ij) Farrar (8 ) reported in 1956 that one Bacillus larvae spore that gains entrance to a bee larva of the proper age under the right conditions may be multiplied two to three billion times in eight or nine days. He recommended that an occasional colony infected with American foulbrood should be burned. As a preventive measure, all remaining colonies should be sprayed with medicated sugar sprays or dusted with medicated powdered sugar dusts. [Pg.35]

Sheng Gan Cao, the raw Gan Cao that has not been processed with honey, has a quite different function from Zhi Gan Cao in that it can reduce heat-toxin. Sheng Gan Cao Shao is very thin in shape and is believed to enter the urinary tract in particular, it can reduce painful, burning and distending sensations in the urinary tract. [Pg.93]

I don t suppose many love yellow star thistle except perhaps the bees attracted by its bright saffron-colored flowers or the honey lovers addicted to the bees sweet product. Most find this weed a nuisance and there is no easy way to remove it. It has taken me many years of burning, mowing, hoeing and replanting with perennial grasses, to restore the old pasture. Today it is full of purple needlegrass, blue wildrye, and California poppies, native species that used to blanket the valley before human activity and invasive weeds all but obliterated them. [Pg.115]

Smell. Many novelists and other writers have described the smell of marijuana as that of burning rope, perhaps getting off on the fact that it comes from the hemp plant. The actual smell is unlike any other herb, but is fairly pronounced and pervasive when marijuana is burned. As the plant matures the sharp, earthy smell of the leaves coming from chlorophyll diminishes as the more honey- and flower-like odors produced by resin and flowers increasingly predominate. Most users like the "taste of all marijuana smoke,... [Pg.307]

Vegetables, animals, and minerals with the help of any burning spirit, not only that of wine, but of com, honey, fruits, leaves or grass, may be most highly purified and reduced to the highest medicines. [Pg.97]

This formula contains cephalanoplos (small thistle), lotus rhizome node, dry-fried cattail pollen, rehmannia, talc, mutong, lophatheri, gardenia fruit, dang gui, and honey-fried licorice. These herbs are antibacterial, antiinflammatory, demulcent, and astringent. The formula is used for bloody, painful urinary conditions with urinary frequency and burning pain on voiding. From a Western perspective, this formula is used for acute cystitis, polycystic kidneys, kidney stones, and BPH. [Pg.81]

Sweet, Honey-like) (Burning taste, taint aromatic) (Woody, Floral, Violet) (Floral, Jasmin-like)... [Pg.284]

Honey has been used in healing remedies for at least 4,000 years. It is now known to act as an antiseptic/antibacterial agent, and is most commonly used as an anti-microbial agent used for dressing wounds, burns, and skin ulcers. [Pg.119]

The first clinical use of penicillin in the United States occurred with the survivors of the Coconut Grove fire in 1942. Bum victims are notoriously prone to severe Staphylococcus aureus infections, and before the early sulfa drugs and penicillin, allopathic physicians knew little about how to prevent them. Aloe and honey are perhaps the two most powerful substances that can be applied externally to speed wound healing and prevent infections in burn victims. One especially important attribute possessed by both substances is that they are liquid. They keep bum tissue moist, soothe the damaged tissues, and restore lost body fluids (a problem for bum victims) directly through the skin. At the same time they are potent anti-inflammatories and antibacterials. It is nearly impossible for a staph infection to get started when either substance is used on burned skin. Clinical practitioners who regularly use aloe report excellent results when it is used on skin wounds of any degree of severity and from any source. [Pg.34]

Subrahmanyam M. A prospective randomized clinical and histological study of superficial burn wound healing with honey and silver sulfadiazine. Burns 1998 24 157-161. [Pg.272]
