If a consultant is hired to do the study, it is equally important for the cHent to inform the consultant of its need ia detail. Siace the coasultant usually does aot have daily access to the cheat as does the ia-house group, it is more important for the consultant to have an accurate statement of the cHent s problem and needs. 

Note that an obvious alternative to the problem of injecting experience is simply to hire only 20+ years experienced engineers for each and every project. In principle, no further help is ever required (except perhaps from the company s creditors) I suspect some companies may have tried this approach too, but for some strange reason don t seem to be around to tell their side of the story.

The usual excuse is, We ll do it soon—when we get some time. Developers are too busy sorting out problems and late updates to do the write-ups. In such a case, a possible damage limiter is to hire a suitably skilled person to spend a few weeks writing the models. This person may be able to clarify some inconsistencies and at the same time transfer some skills to the existing team. But a lack of documentation is a cultural problem and is not easily fixed.

A. That is the way it used to be in the last century. In fact, chemists 100 years ago weren t as plentiful as they are today, and the chemist was hired by the job. Assume you ve got this job requiring explosives, and the chemist was an expert in explosives. The chemist comes in to solve the problem and he says, pay me so much to do this job and pay me so much in royalties on use of the explosive or if you license it to someone else. Usually the agreement would have some modest amount of living expense while the chemist was working on the project plus some return on the invention, sharing the benefits of the invention. If the invention were widely used, the inventor became rich, but those days are long past. 

A. I think it is not factual. The chemist is hired to do research and solve problems whether they amount to inventions or not. If they do amount to inventions, it becomes a windfall for the employer. Inventions are, by definition, windfalls for someone, because they are creations where nothing existed before. I believe inventors, as indispensible creators, should share in the windfalls with the employer who puts up capital, poses the problem, and provides the environment. 

We noted earlier that chemical engineers are seldom concerned with single-reaction systems because they can always be optimized simply by heating to increase the rate or by finding a suitable catalyst [You don t need to hire a chemical engineer to solve the problems in Chapter 3].
