Hepatitis, treatment

Encourage medication compliance with viral hepatitis treatments to increase sustaining virologic response. [Pg.358]

Hepatitis occurred in a 43-year-old woman taking risperidone 6 mg/day and clozapine 600 mg/day [135 ]. The condition completely remitted after switching to paliperidone. Although clozapine itself or the combination of the two drugs could not be ruled out as the cause of the hepatitis, treatment with clozapine was almost unchanged, and the authors attributed the hepatotoxic-ity to risperidone. [Pg.72]

Inactivation and Removal of Viruses. In developing methods of plasma fractionation, the possibiHty of transmitting infection from human vimses present in the starting plasma pool has been recognized (4,5). Consequentiy, studies of product stabiHty encompass investigation of heat treatment of products in both solution (100) and dried (101) states to estabHsh vimcidal procedures that could be appHed to the final product. Salts of fatty acid anions, such as sodium caprylate [1984-06-17, and the acetyl derivative of the amino acid tryptophan, sodium acetyl-tryptophanate [87-32-17, are capable of stabilizing albumin solutions to 60°C for 10 hours (100) this procedure prevents the transmission of viral hepatitis (102,103). The degree of protein stabilization obtained (104) and the safety of the product in clinical practice have been confirmed (105,106). The procedure has also been shown to inactivate the human immunodeficiency vims (HIV) (107). [Pg.530]

The oxa2ohdinedione trimethadione [127-48-0] C H NO (50), at one time the dmg of choice for the treatment of absence sei2ures, has been replaced by ethosuximide (41) and valproate (49). (50) has a distinct profile from that of phenytoin but causes photophobia and night blindness in approximately 30% of the patients taking it and has the CNS and sedative properties seen for other anticonvulsants together with moderate neutropenia, hepatitis, and skin rashes (13). Trimethadione does not appear to produce its effects via modulation of GABA-mediated responses. [Pg.537]

A marked improvement is generally noted after 4—8 weeks of treatment. Treatment is often continued until a total dose of 3 g is reached. In the case of coccidioidomycosis, for example, treatment with 0.4—0.8 mg/kg/d may last months. The polyene is adrninistered intrathecaHy to treat Coccidioides meningitis. However, the results are only moderate. It is very important to check renal and hepatic function during treatment with amphotericin B. [Pg.256]

Ara-A-5 -monophosphate [29984-33-6] (ara-AMP), C2QH24N OyP, is more water-soluble than ara-A, and therefore can be used in higher dosage during the first hours of treatment of viral infections. Ara-AMP has been shown to decrease virion-associated DNA polymerase concentrations in ground squirrels carrying ground squirrel hepatitis vims. The hypoxanthine derivative, ara-HxMP [54656-49-4] (24) is more water-soluble, appears to have a similar antiviral spectmm to ara-A, and is considerably less toxic (48). [Pg.307]

Electrotransport technology offers a number of benefits for therapeutic appHcations, including systemic or local adininistration of a wide variety of therapeutic agents with the potential adininistration of peptides and proteins long-term noninvasive administration, improving convenience and compliance controlled release, providing a desired deflvery profile over an extended period with rapid onset of efficacious plasma dmg levels and in some cases reduced side effects and a transport rate relatively independent of skin type or site. Additional benefits include easy inception and discontinuation of treatment, patterned and feedback-controlled deflvery, and avoidance of first-pass hepatic metaboHsm. [Pg.145]

Bihmbin oxidase [80619-01 -8] derived from Mjrothecium verrucaria was modified with polyethyleneglycol when this conjugate was injected intravenously to jaundiced rats, the plasma bihmbin dropped to normal levels. This approach might have potential in the treatment of hyperbihmbinemia, fulminant hepatitis, and neonatal bihmbin encephalopathy (177). [Pg.312]

Uracil is used more effectively, in nucleic acid synthesis within a rat hepatoma than in normal liver. This observation appears to have stimulated the synthesis of 5-fluorouracil (1027) as an antimetabolite mainly because the introduction of a fluorine atom involves a minimal increase in size. In the event, 5-fluorouracil did prove to have antineoplastic activity and it is now a valuable drug for treatment of tumors of the breast, colon or rectum, and to a lesser extent, gastric, hepatic, pancreatic, uterine, ovarian and bladder carcinomas. As with other drugs which interfere with DNA synthesis, the therapeutic index is quite low and great care is required during treatment (69MI21301). [Pg.152]

Multidimensional LC has also been used to determine ursodeoxycholic acid and its conjugates in serum (14). These compounds are used in the treatment of cholesterol gallstones, hepatitis and bilary cirrhosis. These authors employed a traditional (10 X 4 mm) pre-column and a micro-bore (35 X 2 mm) analytical column that were interfaced by using a six-port switching valve. [Pg.413]

Dacarbazine is the most active compound used for treating metastatic melanoma. It is also combined with anthracyclines and other cytostatics in the treatment of different sarcomas and Hodgkin s disease. Dacarbazine may cause severe nausea and vomiting. Myelosuppres-sion results in leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Alopecia and transient abnormalities in renal and hepatic function also occur. [Pg.57]

The glucan synthase inhibitor caspofungin (intravenous formulation) is new on the market for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis in patients whose disease is refractory to, or who are intolerant of, other therapies. During the clinical trials fever, infused vein complications, nausea, vomiting and in combination with cyclosporin mild transient hepatic side effects were observed. Interaction with tacrolismius and with potential inducer or mixed inducer/inhibitors of drug clearance was also seen. [Pg.134]

The plasma half-life of 6-MP after intravenous bolus injection is 21 min in children and is twofold greater in adults. After oral intake peak levels are attained within 2 h. 6-MP is used for the treatment of ALL and has shown certain activity in chronic myelogenous leukemia. The major side effects involve myelosuppression, nausea, vomiting, and hepatic injury. [Pg.149]

BFNs are classified into three groups a, (3, and y, and the different classes are produced from different cell types. Recombinant BFN-a is used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C. [Pg.197]
