Standardization and Testing. Potency is determiaed by quantitating the Hepatitis B antigen by an antibody-biading assay combiaed with a determination of the amount of proteia. Safety testing typical for cell culture-derived products is also performed, and iacludes assuting the absence of Hve vims.

After a patient of a London doctor (who practiced an unusual acupuncture technique involving re-injection of native blood) acquired hepatitis B, 352 of his patients treated by this method were investigated 33 were positive for hepatitis B antigen and 30 showed complete nucleotide identity in the DNA segments derived from the surface and core genes (102). One of the most successful preparations to date is that of an edible vaccine for hepatitis B.66 Volunteers who had been previously immunized parenterally (by injection, not by mouth) with the licensed, recombinant hepatitis B vaccine in yeast were given three doses over a period of 28 days of the hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) as a recombinant protein in potatoes.
