Depth-of-Gut Notching. Depth-of-cut notching (DOCN) is a localized wear process common when machining materials such as austenitic stainless steels or high temperature alloys. Notching is attributed to the chemical reaction of the tool material and the atmosphere, or to abrasion by the hard, sawtooth outer edge of the chip. DOCN may lead to tool fracture. [Pg.443]

Wear. Ceramics generally exhibit excellent wear properties. Wear is deterrnined by a ceramic s friction and adhesion behavior, and occurs by two mechanisms adhesive wear and abrasive wear (43). Adhesive wear occurs when interfacial adhesion produces a localized Kj when the body on one side of the interface is moved relative to the other. If the strength of either of the materials is lower than the interfacial shear strength, fracture occurs. Lubricants (see Lubricants and lubrication) minimize adhesion between adj acent surfaces by providing an interlayer that shears easily. Abrasive wear occurs when one material is softer than the other. Particles originating in the harder material are introduced into the interface between the two materials and plow into and remove material from the softer material (52). Hard particles from extrinsic sources can also cause abrasive wear, and wear may occur in both of the materials depending on the hardness of the particle. [Pg.326]

Hard plating is noted for its excellent hardness, wear resistance, and low coefficient of friction. Decorative plating retains its brilliance because air exposure immediately forms a thin, invisible protective oxide film. The chromium is not appHed directiy to the surface of the base metal but rather over a nickel (see Nickel and nickel alloys) plate, which in turn is laid over a copper (qv) plate. Because the chromium plate is not free of cracks, pores, and similar imperfections, the intermediate nickel layer must provide the basic protection. Indeed, optimum performance is obtained when a controlled but high density (40—80 microcrack intersections per linear millimeter) of microcracks is achieved in the chromium lea ding to reduced local galvanic current density at the imperfections and increased cathode polarization.
