The star anise (I//icium verumHook E.) is from a smaH evergreen tree, native to southwest China. When ripe, the hard brown fmits of this tree open up into an eight-pointed star, hence the name. The flavor and aroma of this spice is similar to that of P. anisum, the essential oils are of similar composition. The uses are similar but more localized. [Pg.27]

ABSTRACT Southwest China s geochemical mapping project to measure 76 elements was initiated in 2000. 2700 composite samples were analysed by ICP-MS, XRF and ICP-AES, along with other techniques where necessary. The resulting geochemical maps shows the distribution of majority of the elements in the periodic table. [Pg.397]

On May 12, 2008, just one day before the symposium, a major earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan County in southwest China s Sichuan province. It is the biggest disaster in Chinese history. As many as 70,000 people died, 20,000 people were missing and millions of people became homeless. To express our sympathy and help the people in the earthquake area, the symposium participants benevolently donated more than 1200 US dollars during the symposium. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, 1 would like to thank all of the donors for their kind support to the people in earthquake area. [Pg.489]

In the Guizhou Province in southwest China, local coal with an extremely high arsenic content (up to 3.5%) is used for cooking. Chili peppers dried over open coal-burning stoves contained > 500 mg As kg , compared with normal As levels < 1 mg kg . Similar levels were also found in other tainted foods and kitchen dust, whereas As in drinking water in this area does not appear to be an important contamination factor (Finkelman et al. 1999). [Pg.1336]

Panax japonicus var. major is a wild dicotyledonous herb of Araliaceae which is maiidy distributed in southwest China and Himalayas areas . Its root has been used as an expectorant, antitussive and hemostatic in Chinese herbal medicine for a long time. And the main active constituents were thought as a wide range of saponins and sapogenins . Biotechnological alternative, i.e. cullus cultures, cell suspension cultures and hairy root cultures, has been adopted for in vitro saponin production. But, no study has been made for the tissue culture and secondary metabolism of this plant. This paper describes the hairy root culture and its saponin formation. [Pg.91]

In the area around Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in west China, especially in southwest China, the neotectonic movement leads to a fact that many bedding slopes come into being and the rock is much crushed, which provides a very helpful slope geological structure to the disaster of slope instability. And on the contrary, in the area of east China and south China, the slope geological structure is not so well for the disaster of slope instability. [Pg.156]

Earthquakes provide the driving force for GDIE, and the current seismic peak ground acceleration zonation map of China is shown in Figure 2. So GDIE happen commonly in the areas with Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) > 0.10 g (especially > 0.20 g), which are mainly in the west China, especially southwest China, and secondary in the north China and Taiwan province. And contrary, in the broad area of south China, middle China, east China and northeast China, GDIE are very poor. [Pg.156]

And those big rivers in west China, especially in southwest China, are important waterway or river channel, and there many big reservoirs as the main hydropower resources base of China, which provides helpful conditions to the disaster of surge. [Pg.156]
