Active/passive device Active devices require input of power, most often low-level (5-24 V) DC, to achieve their specified function, with the ctmse-quence that their output RF power level can exceed RF input powo-. Passive devices, on the other hand, effect some transformation of the input signal without use of any external power source, so that the output power is always less than or equal to the input power. The hand building finish is not only one of the oldest but also one of the most important kind of finishes. Very different natural and synthetic polymers are used for an astonishing variety of hand effects. The main effects of fullness and stiffness enable a very interesting hand design, often in combination with other finishes. Softness and hardness or stiffness are incompatible contrasts, but there are -especially with the filling finish - many fluent transitions. One final example of ultrafast kinetics performed at radiolysis facilities is the study of excited states of radical ions. An accelerator pulse can be used to generate radical species, which can then be excited by a pump laser beam and probed with femtosecond resolution by another laser pulse with variable optical delay. This application does not depend on precise correlation of the electron and laser pulses and can be done at almost all radiolysis facilities. The availability of femtosecond lasers in photocathode facilities places all the necessary components to hand. Effective pump-probe measurements will require significant concentrations of radical ions.
