Reports have appeared in the Hterature of the use of human growth hormone in older men. It has been proposed that a reduction in growth hormone in old age is responsible for increased adipose tissue, loss of lean body mass, and thinning of skin. Current studies conducted on older men indicate the hormone reverses these effects. In the parameters studied the patients resembled those of persons 10 —20 years younger (70). 

Chitosan microsphere-encapsulated human growth hormone seems to be quite effective in early bone consolidation in distraction osteogenesis [342]. 

Basically growth hormones alter the normal growth of some insect species. The juvenile growth hormone worked effectively to kill some insects in the laboratory, but when applied in the field for pest control, the hormone was not effective. Its problems centered on its high cost, rapid rate of breakdown after application, and its broad spectrum effects. For example, the hormone was found to kill beneficial species as well as pest species, much like insecticides. Thus far, it has not proven to be a useful technology for pest control (42).

Otfier fiormones accelerate tfie release of free fatty acids from adipose tissue and raise tfie plasma free fatty acid concentration by increasing the rate of lipolysis of the triacylglycerol stores (Figure 25—8). These hormones act in a facilitatory or permissive capacity with respect to other lipolytic endocrine factors. 

Although the principle has been incorporated into a number of international directives and conventions, e.g. the Convention on Climate Change, it has found only limited judicial support. For example the EU failed in a case to ban US beef on the grounds that it contained growth hormone which may have a detrimental effect on human health.
